While the safety team on the ground can support and assist as needed, the primary spotter for movement on the log is the facilitator who is overseeing the traverse.

The requirement focuses on ensuring outdoor, load-bearing hardware is both durable and corrosion-resistant. Galvanizing coats steel with zinc, giving sacrificial rust protection that lasts in wet, variable outdoor conditions common on challenge courses. Drop forging, a process that shapes metal under high pressure, produces parts with refined grain flow, higher strength, and better fatigue resistance than many other manufacturing methods. Together, galvanized and drop-forged hardware resists corrosion and maintains strength under repetitive, dynamic loads, which is essential for safety-critical installations. Other options don’t meet the same safety standard: stainless and corrosion resistance are helpful, but cost and compatibility with typical hardware systems can be limiting; painting can mask wear and isn’t a reliable corrosion barrier in outdoor environments; torque-testing is a quality-control step, not a material or manufacturing requirement, and being merely bolt-threaded doesn’t address the needed strength and corrosion protection.

The important idea is using a secure, fixed anchor point that can reliably carry the dynamic loads of a facilitator setup. A dead end with a serving sleeve, also known as a false loop, is not a trustworthy anchor. It creates a loop that isn’t tied to a stable, load-bearing point, so it can slip, shift, or tighten unpredictably under load. The rope can be loaded in ways that cause abrasion, slippage, or sudden failure, and this type of termination is difficult to inspect and certify as safe. In contrast, true anchor points like belay cables or grounded anchors are designed to withstand dynamic forces and are easy to inspect, making them acceptable. A pole wrap, while primarily a protective measure for rope contact, is configured to support a proper attachment when used with appropriate hardware, but a false loop offers no reliable, inspectable load path.

Dynamic belay points are subjected to movement and sudden loads, so the gates must stay closed to maintain a secure connection. Using two locking carabiners—either two screw-gate or two auto-locking—provides essential redundancy: both carabiners are kept closed during dynamic forces, reducing the chance that a gate could swing open and release the rope at a critical moment. If two non-locking carabiners were used, a gate could unintentionally open under load; mixing one locking and one non-locking leaves a single point where the connection could fail. The choice of aluminum vs steel doesn’t address this locking requirement, so it isn’t the determining factor here.

The Five H's refer to essential safety checks and equipment considerations before using a challenge course: Helmet protects the head; Hair must be secured to prevent snagging; Harness keeps the person safely attached to the system; Hardware covers the critical connecting pieces like carabiners and anchors; and Human refers to the participant and staff ensuring proper training, readiness, and adherence to procedures. This set lists exactly those five elements: Helmet, Hair, Harness, Hardware, and Human. Carabiner is a piece of hardware, so including it separately would add an extra item beyond the five, which is why it isn’t part of the five H’s.
