Backlash is the small gap between meshing gear teeth when the gears are in contact. That clearance lets the gears carry lubrication films, tolerate manufacturing tolerances, and accommodate thermal expansion so the teeth don’t rub and bind. It’s an important parameter because too little backlash can cause interference and high wear, while too much backlash can lead to play, noise, and reduced precision. Measuring it is about quantifying that gap. The common method uses a dial indicator placed against a tooth and the gears are moved so one tooth can slide relative to the other; the reading on the dial (the amount of axial or radial movement at the pitch line) gives the backlash. Another way is to perform gear tooth play checks with a master gear or gauge to verify the gap lies within specified limits. The key idea is the measurement expresses how much free movement exists between meshing teeth when they’re in contact, not friction, timing, or oil color.

The key idea here is how range shifting is commanded within a transmission. When a transmission uses hydraulic range shifting, a range shift control valve is the component that directs hydraulic pressure to the actuators (clutches or bands) that engage the appropriate range gear. In other words, this valve controls which circuit gets pressurized to switch between high and low ranges. That makes it the part responsible for performing the shift itself. The other parts don’t perform gear shifting: the starter motor is for starting the engine, a ballast resistor limits electrical current in circuits, and a pressure relief valve only guards the system by limiting pressure, not selecting gears.

Wheel bearings let the wheel rotate smoothly while carrying the car’s weight. They sit in the wheel hub and provide a low-friction interface between the wheel and the suspension, handling both radial loads (the weight and road forces) and axial loads (from braking, cornering, and steering). Sealed bearings keep lubricant in and contaminants out, which preserves smooth rotation, proper alignment, and longevity. If a bearing wears or fails, you can get play, noise, vibrations, heat, or even wheel seizure, which can be unsafe. These bearings themselves don’t control hydraulic fluid, don’t drive the wheels via the differential, and don’t regulate engine timing—their job is simply to support and let the wheel spin with minimal friction.

The pinion seal’s job is to seal around the pinion shaft where it passes through the differential housing, keeping the differential oil inside the gearcase and preventing leaks. The gears inside the differential are bathed in oil to stay lubricated, so the seal around the shaft blocks oil from escaping along the shaft while also keeping dirt and water out. If the seal wears or leaks, oil can escape, leading to reduced lubrication and potential gear damage. This seal is not about the engine oil pan, it doesn’t secure the driveshaft to the differential, and it doesn’t regulate oil temperature.

The air that moves the splitter piston is directed by the insert valve. This valve sits in the valve body and routes compressed air to the correct side of the splitter cylinder, causing the piston to extend or retract and shift the splitter gear. It also vents the opposite side as needed to complete the motion. The regulator assembly only sets the pressure, not the direction of flow; the control valve in the gearshift knob selects the action, but the actual directing of air to the piston happens through the insert valve. The splitter cylinder is the actuator being moved, not the device that directs the air.
