What the Course Entails and Exam Details

This examination is not a course but an assessment that focuses on several core academic and instructional areas essential for a teaching assistant. The framework of the exam is divided into four sub-areas: Reading, Writing, Mathematics, and Instructional Support. TAs must demonstrate proficiency in understanding diverse text types, applying basic grammar and writing mechanics, executing mathematical operations including algebra and data interpretation, and understanding instructional techniques across various subject areas. Candidates need to show competence in offering support during individual, small-group, and whole-class instruction, adapting materials, and managing student behavior under the guidance of a licensed teacher.

Note for candidates: The ATAS (095) test is scheduled to be retired and will be replaced by the National Evaluation Series™ Foundations of Classroom Support and Instruction (519) test. Students planning to take the ATAS should register and complete the exam before the designated retirement date in August 2026.

What to Expect in the Final Exam

The final exam is a computer-based test (CBT) consisting of 100 multiple-choice questions. You will be given a total of 3 hours of active testing time to complete the examination, with an additional 15 minutes provided for a tutorial and nondisclosure agreement. The questions focus on application and knowledge rather than complex theory. You must achieve a scaled score of at least 220 to pass the exam. Questions are generally equally weighted, and there is no penalty for guessing, so it is advisable to answer every question. You will receive preliminary test results immediately upon completion of the test appointment, but official score reports will be provided at a later date.

Time management practice is crucial; complete full-length practice tests to build stamina and pacing for the 3-hour limit.

The exam is administered by appointment year-round, Monday through Saturday (excluding holidays). You must register for the test online through the New York State Teacher Certification Examinations (NYSTCE) website. After registration, you can schedule your appointment at any authorized Pearson VUE testing center. These physical testing centers are located throughout New York State and nationwide, providing flexibility for candidates to choose a convenient location. It is important to book your spot early, as appointments are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.
