What the Course Entails and Exam Details

This examination is not a course, but a rigorous assessment of professional competence. Candidates must meet substantial eligibility requirements before applying, including current RD status for at least two years and a minimum of 2,000 hours of specialty practice in sports dietetics within the last five years. While there is no single required training program, the exam covers four major content domains. These domains include the assessment and evaluation of active individuals, the creation of comprehensive nutrition plans to support training and competition, the implementation and management of sports nutrition protocols, and the continuous evaluation of outcomes to ensure safety and effectiveness.

What to Expect in the Final Exam

The CSSD exam is a computer-based, multiple-choice test. The standardized examination contains 150 questions. Of these, 125 are scored questions that determine your final outcome, while 25 are un-scored pretest questions designed by the CDR for statistical research on future exam items. All questions are integrated throughout the test, and candidates are not able to distinguish between scored and un-scored items. Candidates are allowed three hours of total testing time to complete the entire examination. The passing standard is established by the CDR using a criterion-referenced method.

How to Study and Exam Centers

Preparation for the CSSD exam requires a balanced approach of reviewing theoretical knowledge and practicing case-study application. We highly recommend first studying the official "CSSD Examination Content Outline" and the recommended "Reference List" provided by the CDR. Actionable strategies include utilizing comprehensive study guides, engaging with practice tests, and creating flashcards for key equations and guidelines. Candidates should also review recent peer-reviewed research in sports nutrition to ensure their knowledge is current.

The examination is administered by a testing vendor contracted by the CDR at designated computer testing centers nationwide. Once your eligibility application is approved by the CDR, you will receive a candidate handbook that contains detailed instructions on how to schedule your exam appointment at a location and time most convenient for you.
