A firm rap or a series of taps helps everyone know when to start, pause, or move on, keeping business and the ritual moving smoothly. It isn’t used to announce a banquet, measure how long the meeting lasts, or settle disputes—those tasks are handled by the appropriate officers or by the members’ votes according to the lodge’s rules.

At the doorway, the lodge is opened through a ceremonial signal: three distinct knocks from outside, answered by a like number from inside. This ritual gatekeeping, performed under the watch of the Inner Guard, signals the visitor’s arrival and allows admission in an orderly, recognized manner. The timing and repetition of the knocks set the tone for the ceremony and begin the process of entering the lodge, symbolizing bringing light and order into the space. The handshake with the Master, a whispered password, or a sponsor’s introduction are involved in recognition or presentation inside, but they do not constitute the act that opens the door to admission.

The main concept here is that the Blue Lodge, which confers the Craft degrees, is traditionally male-only in regular Freemasonry. Women are not eligible to become Masons in the Blue Lodge. If a woman is interested in Masonic work or fellowship, she would look to appendant or affiliated bodies that admit women, such as the Order of the Eastern Star, which operates alongside the Craft and has its own membership rules. So the correct understanding is that the Blue Lodge is for men, while women may participate in related appendant orders.

In the moment a candidate is brought from darkness into light, the first things seen are the three great lights of Freemasonry—the Holy Bible, the Square, and the Compasses. These symbols establish the framework for a Mason’s life: the Bible represents divine guidance and conscience, the Square stands for moral conduct and integrity, and the Compasses symbolize self-control and the proper boundaries of conduct. Placing these lights on the altar at the outset marks the path from darkness to light and reminds the candidate of the duties and principles that will guide him. The Lambskin apron, while an important symbol of innocence and the work ahead, is not the first object presented. The Master’s staff and gavel belong to lodge officers and are not shown as the initial focus of the ceremony, and a book of rules isn’t singled out as the first object viewed.

Honesty in Masonry is a living standard that guides both what a Mason says and what a Mason does. Truth is urged as a fundamental virtue in word and deed because trust among brothers and in everyday life rests on honest communication and faithful conduct. The symbolic teachings of the lodge—upright behavior, self-control of passions, and integrity under all circumstances—support this idea, showing that living truthfully is a constant practice, not a one-time choice. In concrete terms, this means telling the truth even when it’s uncomfortable, keeping commitments, and aligning actions with stated beliefs. Withholding information or bending the truth for privacy undermines the very fabric of trust that Masonry aims to build. The notion that truth applies only to initiates or that it’s optional conflicts with the universal, practical standard Masonry sets for all members.
