Preparing for the CSET involves a comprehensive deep dive into the specific domains required for your chosen teaching area. The CSET is not a single test, but rather a series of distinct subtests that candidates may take individually or in combination.

The core syllabus is defined by the CSET Content Specifications. For Multiple Subject candidates, the course entails mastery of four broad areas across three subtests: Reading, Language, and Literature; History and Social Science; Science and Mathematics; and Physical Education, Human Development, and Visual and Performing Arts.

For Single Subject candidates, the focus is a foundational to advanced understanding of one specific domain, such as Mathematics, English, Social Science, Science (including physics, chemistry, biology, or earth sciences), World Languages, Art, or Physical Education.

 What to Expect in the Final Exam

The final CSET exams are comprehensive assessments administered via computer at authorized testing centers or, for some subtests, through online proctoring from home. The format is a combination of Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQs) designed to test breadth of knowledge, and Constructed-Response Questions (CRQs)—which include short answers and essays—to test your ability to apply and synthesize complex information.

To receive a passing designation, candidates must achieve a scaled score of at least 220 on each required subtest within their subject area.

Each subtest is individually timed, with time limits ranging from approximately one hour to over three hours depending on the complexity of the subject matter; candidates must manage their time carefully between the MCQs and the written response sections.
