About this Exam

The California Wastewater Treatment Operator Grade 2 Certification is a pivotal milestone for professionals dedicated to protecting the state's water resources. This certification verifies that an operator has acquired the necessary knowledge, skills, and qualifying experience to operate and maintain a wastewater treatment plant safely and effectively at an intermediate level. It is designed for existing Grade 1 operators looking to advance their careers, or Operator-In-Training (OIT) candidates who have met the foundational education requirements and are seeking to qualify for higher-level plant responsibilities. Achieving this grade level demonstrates a commitment to public health, environmental stewardship, and professional growth within the vital field of water quality management.

What the Course Entails and Exam Details

The path to Grade 2 certification entails a comprehensive understanding of core wastewater treatment unit processes and maintenance principles. While not a conventional "course" with a universal syllabus, candidates must master material typically covered in Sacramento State’s (Ken Kerri) "Operation of Wastewater Treatment Plants" Volume I and portions of Volume II, or equivalent accepted coursework.

The core topics you must master for this exam include:

Basic safety practices and the identification of hazards encountered within a wastewater facility.

Operation and maintenance procedures for preliminary and primary treatment processes, such as screening, grit removal, and primary clarification.

Detailed knowledge of secondary treatment unit processes, specifically activated sludge, trickling filters, and stabilization ponds.

Solids handling and treatment methods, including anaerobic sludge digestion and thickening.

Sampling procedures and simple laboratory analysis of wastewater constituents (e.g., BOD, TSS, pH, D.O.).

Techniques for the evaluation of wastewater unit processes and overall plant performance.

State regulations regarding the classification of wastewater treatment plants and operator certification requirements.

Basic supervisory responsibilities and principles.

Intermediate water mathematics. You must be able to solve practical calculations related to loading rates (hydraulic and organic), removal efficiency, MCRT, F/M ratio, pumping rates, detention time, and chlorine residual/demand.

What to Expect in the Final Exam

The California Grade 2 exam is administered by the State Water Resources Control Board’s (SWRCB) Wastewater Operator Certification Program (WWOCP) as a computer-based testing (CBT) format. This modern system allows for year-round scheduling at numerous authorized testing centers throughout the state.

The exam details are structured as follows:

The exam consists entirely of multiple-choice and true/false questions, including practical math problems where you must select the correct numerical result from the options provided.

You are given 2 1/2 hours to complete the examination.

The Grade 2 exam generally follows this breakdown:

  • 50 True/False Questions
  • 30 Multiple Choice Questions
  • 10 Math Problems

To achieve a passing score, candidates must satisfy two requirements:

  • A minimum total score of 70 percent on the entire exam.
  • A minimum score of 50 percent specifically on the math problems section.

Currently, the exams are administered via a network of computer-based testing centers. Candidates do not need to perform a practical, hands-on demonstration within the exam center, but the questions are designed to test your ability to apply practical knowledge.

How to Study and Exam Centers

Effective preparation is key to conquering the Grade 2 exam. Since the nationwide pass rate for these certifications can be challenging, we recommend a multi-faceted study strategy:

Start with the foundation. The Sacramento State (Ken Kerri) "Operation of Wastewater Treatment Plants" manuals are the primary source material for the exam. Create a detailed study plan to read, highlight, and summarize key sections.

Math is often the deciding factor. Dedicate significant time to practicing calculations for every unit process. Review variables for organic loading, hydraulic loading, MCRT, F/M ratio, and detention time until you can solve them confidently. Utilized sample math question playlists from reputable online sources.

Consider enrolling in a dedicated Grade 2 exam preparation course. Organizations like the American Water College or the California Rural Water Association (CRWA) offer review courses, video lectures, and practice quizzes designed to mirror the state exam structure.

Simulate the exam experience. Purchase or acquire Grade 2 practice tests and take them under timed conditions. This builds test-taking stamina and helps you identify your weakest subject areas for focused review.

Exam Centers and Process

The application process must still be completed through the SWRCB. You should submit your exam application and required fees through the Operator Certification Information System (OCIS) Online Portal on the Water Boards website.

Once your application is approved, the WWOCP will provide instructions on how to schedule your computer-based exam. Exams are taken at authorized third-party testing centers (such as those operated by Pearson VUE or similar authorized proctors).

There are more than 30 testing centers statewide, offering year-round availability.

Job Opportunities from the Course

The certification unlocks the following specific job titles and career paths:

  • Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator II
  • Senior Wastewater Operator
  • Wastewater System Operator II
  • Lead Plant Operator
  • Stationary Engineer, Sewage Plant
