What the Course Entails and Exam Details

This comprehensive practice exam covers the essential knowledge domains required for the ANCC Cardiac-Vascular Nursing Board Certification. While it is not a traditional “course,” your preparation will entail deep review of core clinical topics and professional practice standards defined in the official test content outline. Key subject areas you must master include cardiac anatomy and physiology, detailed cardiovascular physical assessment, and the interpretation of relevant diagnostic tests such as ECGs and cardiac biomarkers. You will also review the pathophysiology and management of critical conditions, including Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS), various types of heart failure, valvular heart disease, acute arrhythmias, and diseases of the aorta and peripheral vascular system. The review also heavily emphasizes cardiovascular disease risk factors, reduction strategies, patient and community education, and the legal and ethical aspects of professional cardiac nursing practice.

What to Expect in the Final Exam

The final certification exam is a computer-based assessment. You can expect to encounter a total of 150 multiple-choice questions during the exam session. It is important to note that only 125 of these questions are scored, while the remaining 25 are unscored pretest questions used for future test development. Candidates are allotted a maximum of three and a half hours (3.5 hours) to complete the full exam. There are no scheduled breaks during the timed portion, and any breaks taken will deduct from your available testing time. A scaled score of 350 or higher is required to pass the exam, with the scale ranging from 1 to 500. Results are typically provided to candidates immediately upon completion of the test.

How to Study and Exam Centers

Effective preparation for the CVRN exam requires a structured study approach. Start by thoroughly downloading and analyzing the official ANCC Test Content Outline, which lists every topic you might be tested on. Utilize recommended study aids, including the ANCC’s own Readiness Tests and sample question papers to familiarize yourself with the question format. Many nurses find it beneficial to enroll in formal CVRN review courses or to use comprehensive study guides from reputable educational providers. Create a consistent study schedule that allows you to review one major content domain at a time, followed by practice quizzes to test your retention. Once you are eligible and have applied through the ANCC website, you will schedule your examination appointment at a Prometric Testing Center, which are located in professional testing facilities across the United States and internationally.
