CDX tells you about both veneer quality and adhesive type. The C and D indicate the faces are lower-grade veneers, which means they may have more knots and surface flaws that aren’t desirable for exposed finishes. The X means the plywood is bonded with exterior-grade glue, which holds up better when moisture is present. That combination makes CDX appropriate for exterior exposure or damp conditions, such as exterior wall and roof sheathing or subfloors in moisture-prone areas. It’s not intended for interior cabinetry or high-finish decorative paneling, and marine-grade plywood uses a different specification and waterproofing. So the best fit is exterior-grade plywood with exterior glue, used where moisture exposure is possible.

The main idea here is that a double top plate adds strength and continuity to the wall frame. The top plate sits on top of the vertical studs and carries load from above, so having two plates increases the surface area you can nail into and strengthens how the wall transfers that load across the frame. It also lets you stagger or splice joints in the plates so a joint doesn’t line up across every stud, which keeps the wall more rigid and better able to handle forces without cracking or shifting. This setup also helps when walls meet at corners or intersections, giving a solid, continuous tie across the framing. Saying it’s for saving material isn’t accurate—a double plate uses more material. It isn’t primarily for decoration, and while wiring can run through wall cavities, the double top plate isn’t there to “allow more wiring”; its purpose is structural—strength and continuity.

When lumber is sold, it carries a single marking that conveys multiple details about the piece: the brand (trade mark), the quality level (grade), the mill where it came from (mill number), what kind of wood it is (species), and how its surface is finished (surface condition). That marking functions as the grade, serving as the umbrella descriptor for all of those attributes. The grade tells you the overall quality category, and the stamp includes the other facts so you know exactly what you’re getting. Finish or species or trademark alone don’t capture the whole package—the grade is the best fit because it represents the overall classification that includes all those details.

Driving nails quickly and consistently into wood is best accomplished with a nail gun. A pneumatic or cordless nail gun uses compressed air or a battery to drive nails in a single controlled motion, delivering uniform depth with each shot and reducing fatigue from repeated swings. This speed and consistency are hard to beat with a hammer, which relies on your swing and can lead to variable depth, bent nails, or wood damage. Tools like a screwdriver are designed for screws, not nails, and pliers can’t drive nails at all. So for fast, even nailing, a nail gun is the go-to tool.

The point is to verify depth by checking from the far side and making sure the fastener sits flush or just below the surface. When a nail or screw is driven, you want the head and shank to be beneath or level with the wood so nothing sticks out to catch or weaken the edge. By looking at or feeling the opposite face, you can tell if the fastener would protrude. If you can see the head or a bit of the shank poking through, it’s not seated properly. In that case, use a countersink to create a shallow recess so the head can sit below the surface and drive again until it’s flush. Once seated, test or check with a light and ensure the surface is smooth and the fastener is fully engaged. Hammering to level with the surface isn’t reliable for depth and can damage the work. Guessing by eye isn’t precise enough for a flush fit. Cutting off protruding portions with pliers is rough, can mar the finish, and doesn’t ensure proper seating or structural integrity.
