You are required to demonstrate mastery in five critical domains:

•  Ethical Principles and Foundations: Proving a deep understanding of the Belmont Report’s three foundational principles: Respect for Persons, Beneficence, and Justice.
•  Regulatory Framework: Demonstrating expert knowledge of U.S. federal regulations (such as the Common Rule, 45 CFR 46, and FDA regulations, 21 CFR 50 and 56) and how they apply to various research scenarios.

 IRB Responsibilities and Functions: Understanding the precise requirements for IRB membership, meeting procedures, quorum, documentation, and the mechanics of the review process.

•  HRPP/Institution Responsibilities: Recognizing the institutional responsibilities that support the HRPP, including training, resource allocation, and management of conflicts of interest.
•  Specialized Areas of Research: Applying regulations and ethical principles to complex or vulnerable populations (children, prisoners, pregnant women), investigational drugs and devices, reliance agreements, and unanticipated problems.

 What to Expect in the Final Exam

The CIP exam is a rigorous test designed to differentiate qualified professionals. It is a computer-based examination administered in a proctored environment.

• Format: The exam consists of 130 objective, multiple-choice questions.
• Time Limit: Candidates are allotted a maximum of three hours to complete the entire examination.
• Passing Score: The passing score is scaled based on psychometric analysis. PRIM&R does not publish a fixed numerical percentage but establishes the standard required to demonstrate entry-level proficiency. You should aim for a significant majority correct to ensure success.
• Rules: This is a closed-book examination. No notes, reference materials, or electronic devices are permitted inside the testing area. You will receive official email results within one hour of completion.

 How to Study and Exam Centers

Preparing for the CIP exam requires a blend of hands-on experience and focused theoretical study. Because it is an experience-based exam, you must first verify that you meet the eligibility requirement of at least two years of full-time, relevant IRB professional experience within the past seven years.

• Master the Core Documents: Your primary study material must be the regulations themselves. Memorize the structure and key definitions of 45 CFR 46 and 21 CFR 50/56.
• Utilize Official Resources: Download the CIP Body of Knowledge/Content Outline from the PRIM&R website. This is your study roadmap. Review the CIP Exam References and Resources list provided by PRIM&R.
• Ethical Foundations: Read and re-read the Belmont Report. It dictates why the regulations exist.
• Practice with Purpose: Engage with reputable CIP practice exams to get used to the style of regulatory scenario-based questions. PRIM&R offers a web-based practice exam as an additional tool.
• Form a Study Group: Collaborate with colleagues to discuss complex scenarios and regulatory interpretations.

• Exam Centers: The CIP exam is offered continuously, giving you flexibility in scheduling. It is administered by PRIM&R's testing partner, PSI Services. You have two primary delivery options:

• In-Person Testing Centers: You can take the exam at any authorized PSI physical testing center located globally.
• Online Remote Proctoring: You can take the exam from your own home or office, provided your environment meets strict security requirements and your computer system passes the mandatory technical check. This includes having a working webcam, microphone, and a stable internet connection.
