About this Exam

The Certification in Risk Management Assurance® (CRMA®) is a distinguished professional designation offered by The Institute of Internal Auditors (The IIA). It is designed to demonstrate an individual’s ability to provide assurance on core business processes in risk management and governance, to educate management and the audit committee on risk and risk management concepts, and to serve as a trusted advisor.

This certification is ideal for internal auditors, risk management professionals, and compliance specialists who have responsibility for, and experience in, providing risk assurance, governance processes, quality assurance, or control self-assessment. It focuses on strategic organizational risks rather than just operational ones.

What the Course Entails and Exam Details

Preparing for the CRMA exam requires a deep understanding of governance, enterprise risk management (ERM), and the intersection of internal audit with these processes.

The standard CRMA exam syllabus is divided into three comprehensive domains:

  • Domain I: Internal Audit Roles and Responsibilities (20%): This section covers internal audit’s role in providing assurance over risk management, maintaining independence, and the ethical requirements necessary to be a trusted advisor.
  • Domain II: Risk Management Governance (25%): This domain tests your knowledge of corporate governance structure, risk culture, organizational tone at the top, and how risk management integrates into objective setting and strategy.
  • Domain III: Risk Management Assurance (55%): The largest section focuses on the practical application of assessing risk management processes, designing risk-based audit plans, utilizing control frameworks, and communicating results to stakeholders.

The CRMA is a self-study program, meaning candidates are responsible for their own learning and prep using IIA resources and other professional standards.

The CRMA final exam is a comprehensive, computer-based test that requires strong analytical and evaluation skills. It is not merely a test of recall; it focuses on the application of concepts.

  • Time Limit: You will be given a seat time of 150 minutes (2.5 hours) to complete the test.
  • Scoring: Like other IIA exams, the CRMA is instantly scored upon completion.
  • Prerequisites: While you are not required to have the Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) designation to sit for the CRMA exam, you must have some prior experience in internal audit or risk management to ultimately gain certification.

How to Study and Exam Centers

Effective preparation is key to succeeding on the CRMA exam. Because it is a rigorous test, we recommend the following actionable strategies:

  • Utilize Official Resources: The IIA offers a "CRMA Exam Study Guide and Practice Questions," which is a vital reference tool.
  • Review Key Reference Texts: Study the list of key references provided by The IIA, such as the International Professional Practices Framework (IPPF), the COSO Enterprise Risk Management Framework, and various guides on strategic risks and data analytics.
  • Practice with Purpose: Take advantage of practice questions to understand the logic behind correct answers and to identify your weak areas.
  • Take a Preparation Course: Many IIA chapters and approved providers offer CRMA preparation courses that provide structured learning.

Exam Centers and Scheduling:

The CRMA exam is administered at authorized Pearson VUE testing centers worldwide. You can locate the center nearest you through the Pearson VUE website after completing your application. Effective from May 1, 2025, online proctored exam delivery has been discontinued; all exams must be taken at a physical testing center to ensure exam security.
