What the Course Entails and Exam Details

Preparing for the CAE means mastering the core competencies required to lead a modern association effectively. While ASAE offers comprehensive prep courses, the CAE itself is not a single course, but a cumulative assessment based on a professional’s experience and body of knowledge. To be eligible, candidates must have several years of experience and have completed 100 hours of qualifying professional development within the last five years. The exam itself evaluates knowledge across nine major domains essential to association management, which are: Strategic Management; Governance and Structure; Membership Development; Programs, Products, and Services; Leadership; Administration; Knowledge Management & Research; Public Policy, Government Relations & Coalition Building; and Marketing, Public Relations & Communications. Candidates are expected to apply concepts and logical thinking, not just rely on memorization, as most questions are experience-based.

 What to Expect in the Final Exam

The official CAE examination is a computer-based test offered during two-week windows in May and December of each year. Candidates are given a time limit of four hours to complete the examination, which consists of 200 multiple-choice questions that cover all nine content domains. The results of the exam are not provided immediately; instead, they are released approximately six weeks after the final day of the testing window to allow for thorough post-exam statistical analysis, which ensures the fairness and validity of the final scores. There are special accommodations available for candidates with disabilities.

 How to Study and Exam Centers

ASAE recommends a multi-faceted study approach using official core resources and various learning methods. Candidates can choose from several of ASAE's prep programs, including on-demand foundation courses, a three-month course, and an 11-month cohort-based program that offers guidance from subject matter experts and peer support. Engaging in peer-driven study groups is highly recommended to share insights and discuss real-world scenarios. Actionable study includes taking a practice exam that features questions similar to, but not identical to, the actual test, in addition to using flashcards for content recall. The CAE exam can be taken globally at Meazure Learning testing centers or via live remote proctoring (LRP) from your home or office, providing flexibility for all applicants.
