What the Course Entails and Exam Details

Preparing for the CBRN exam involves a rigorous review of the extensive body of knowledge specific to burn care. The certification itself is not a "course," but rather a validation of expertise that a nurse has gained through experience and dedicated study of the authoritative CBRN Exam Content Outline, which serves as the blueprint for the test. The primary areas covered in the exam, which reflect current evidence-based burn nursing practice, include:

  • Pathophysiology: Etiology of burn injury (thermal, electrical, chemical), local zones of injury, systemic response (burn shock, inflammatory response, SIRS, MODS, metabolic response, physiology of wound healing, inhalation injury).
  • Clinical Practice: Initial Management (<72>
  • Clinical Practice: Wound Management: Wound depth assessment, burn wound care, infection prevention, local wound care, debridement (mechanical, chemical), non-surgical (topical, dressings) and surgical approaches (excision, allograft, xenograft, autograft, ASCS).
  • Clinical Practice: Pain, Agitation, Delirium (PAD) and Pruritus: Assessment, treatment, and evaluation.
  • Rehabilitation and Reintegration: Range of motion, orthotic management, scar massage, psychosocial support, and associated diagnoses (depression, PTSD), community, school, and work reintegration.
  • Special Populations: Pediatrics, older adults, pregnant patients, non-burn skin conditions, non-accidental trauma.
  • Professional Practice: Ethics, palliative/hospice care, quality improvement, interprofessional collaboration, disaster management (mass casualty).

What to Expect in the Final Exam

The CBRN exam is a comprehensive, computer-based national certification test designed to challenge and verify advanced critical thinking skills in the specialty of burn nursing. Candidates can expect a challenging, but fair, examination that covers the full scope of burn care. The key format details are:

  • Exam Format: 175 multiple-choice questions.
  • Scored vs. Unscored: 150 of the questions are scored items, and 25 are unscored pretest items used for statistical data to develop future exams. The pretest items are distributed randomly, so you will not know which questions do not count towards your final score.
  • Time Limit: 3 hours.
  • Passing Score: A passing score is determined through a psychometric analysis and equates to correctly answering approximately 114 to 115 of the 150 scored items (about 76%), depending on the specific exam form.
  • Rules: Standard testing protocols apply, including security measures, prohibition of reference materials, and the use of authorized identification.

How to Study and Exam Centers

Effective preparation for the CBRN exam combines targeted study of professional resources with strong clinical experience in a burn care setting. To maximize your chances of success, consider these strategies:

  • Review the Official Content Outline: This should be your first and most continuous reference. Download the current CBRN Exam Content Outline from the BCEN website to structure your study plan around the exact topics you will be tested on.
  • Study the Primary Textbook: The primary study resource for this exam is the American Burn Association's (ABA) authoritative curriculum, Burn Nursing: Injury Prevention to Rehabilitation and Aftercare. This text covers the entire spectrum of burn care knowledge required.
  • Utilize Official Practice Exams: Take advantage of the official BCEN CBRN practice exam. It provides a simulation of the actual test interface, pulls from a bank of 150 questions, and offers diagnostic feedback and references to guide your study. You can take both timed and non-timed practice attempts.
  • Engage in Review Courses: Many professional organizations, including the ABA and independent nurse education providers, offer in-person and online CBRN Review Courses designed to consolidate key information and test-taking strategies.
  • Exam Center Locations: The CBRN exam is administered at secure, standardized testing centers and also via Live Remote Proctoring (LRP), allowing you to take the exam from a private, approved location.
    • In-Person: You can schedule your exam at a Pearson VUE testing center, which are located throughout the United States, Canada, Australia, and many other international locations.
    • Online LRP: Live Remote Proctoring is conducted through PSI Exams and is available to candidates globally, providing flexibility in scheduling and location. You must ensure your computer meets the technical requirements before registering for this option.
