What the Course Entails and Exam Details

The CDCES is a credential, not a course of study with a mandatory syllabus. Candidates prepare independently, drawing from their clinical experience and comprehensive reference materials. However, the CBDCE provides a detailed Content Outline, which is the foundational blueprint for the exam. This outline is periodically updated to reflect current practice. As of July 1, 2024, the exam covers three primary domains:

• I. Assessment (37 scored questions, ~25%): Focuses on gathering and analyzing patient information, including physical health history, psychosocial status, laboratory data, self-management knowledge and behaviors, and learning readiness.
• II. Care and Education Interventions (105 scored questions, ~70%): The largest section, this domain tests your ability to develop and implement individualized diabetes education plans, including person-centered education on self-care behaviors, pathophysiology, approach to treatment, problem-solving (e.g., sick days, travel), and ongoing evaluation, documentation, and follow-up.
• III. Standards and Practices (8 scored questions, ~5%): This section covers key national standards and practices, including the National Standards for Diabetes Self-Management Education and Support (NSDSMES) and the National Diabetes Prevention Program (National DPP) standards.

The exam consists of 175 multiple-choice questions in total. Out of these, 150 are scored, and 25 are unscored "pretest" questions used for future validation. All questions are linked directly to specific tasks within the content outline, ensuring they are practical and relevant to a CDCES's daily work.

What to Expect in the Final Exam

You must prepare for a rigorous and time-intensive examination. The CDCES exam is a 4-hour, computer-based test composed of objective, multiple-choice questions. It is important to know that the passing standard is set by a panel of experts using the Angoff method. Your final score is reported as a scaled score, ranging from 0 to 99, and the minimum scaled score needed to pass is 70. This system accounts for variations in difficulty between different versions of the test. On test day, you will be required to bring two valid forms of identification, with at least one containing a photograph and both bearing your signature. During the exam, personal items like phones and bags will be secured in a provided locker.

Preparation for the CDCES exam requires dedication and a strategic approach. We highly recommend starting with the official CBDCE website to download the most current Examination Content Outline, which will serve as your roadmap. Successful study strategies include:

• Practice with Purpose: Utilize comprehensive practice exam resources, focusing not just on answering correctly but also on understanding the rationale behind both correct and incorrect answers. This process clarifies the expected application of knowledge.
• Review Core References: Study the current Standards of Care in Diabetes published by the American Diabetes Association (ADA), and the Art and Science of Diabetes Care and Education.
• Identify Knowledge Gaps: Systematically go through the Content Outline and self-assess your proficiency in each task. Prioritize studying the domains where you have the least direct experience.
• Form Study Groups: Collaborating with colleagues who are also preparing can provide new perspectives, motivation, and mutual support.

The CBDCE has partnered with PSI to administer the exam. You can take the test either in-person at a physical PSI Test Center or remotely via Live Remote Online Proctoring (LRP), which allows you to take the exam from a private, secure location with a live proctor monitoring your session over a webcam. Registration is ongoing, and you must schedule and take the exam within a designated 90-day window after your application is approved.
