What the Course Entails and Exam Details

The CGBP certification is based on a comprehensive Body of Knowledge (Delineation) that outlines the critical tasks and knowledge statements a competent global business professional must master. While NASBITE does not require candidates to complete a specific training course, understanding the exam's core domains is essential for preparation.

The CGBP exam evaluates a candidate's competence across four primary domains, each integrated with five cross-cutting 'threads' (Documentation, Legal and Regulatory Compliance, Intercultural Awareness, Technology, and Resources):

  • Global Business Management: Assess, develop, and assist with strategic and operational plans for the international aspects of a business, including recognizing ethical and cultural issues, participating in long-term strategic planning, and understanding market entry strategies.
  • Global Marketing: Assess, plan, and assist with marketing and communication efforts, including conducting market research to identify potential markets, developing a global marketing plan, coordinating the marketing mix of goods and services, and managing global sales activities.
  • Supply Chain Management: Evaluate and assist with dynamic supply chain processes and their risks, including optimizing supply chain solutions, evaluating potential intermediaries (e.g., freight forwarders, customs brokers), and completing the documentation required for the international movement of products and services.
  • Trade Finance: Evaluate and manage financial risks, payment methods, funding, and currency options to support global business activities, including selecting appropriate payment methods, developing a financial plan, and ensuring compliance with financial regulations.

What to Expect in the Final Exam

The final Certified Global Business Professional (CGBP) exam is a rigorous test of an individual's practical knowledge in international trade. It does not certify expert-level knowledge but rather a proficient understanding of the tasks associated with a practitioner having at least two years of experience.

Here are the specific details:

  • Exam Format: The CGBP exam is entirely composed of 165 multiple-choice questions. Only 150 of these questions are scored, while the other 15 are unscored, pre-test items used for research purposes.
  • Scoring: The CGBP exam uses a scaled scoring system, with reported scores ranging from a low of 200 to a high of 800.
  • Passing Score: To earn the CGBP credential, a candidate must achieve a minimum scaled score of 500.
  • Time Limit: Candidates are typically given three hours to complete the examination.
  • Administration: The exam is offered four times a year during specific 'windows' (March, June, September, and November/December). The most common format is a live online proctored session, allowing candidates to take the test from a secure, private location. Registration must typically be completed four weeks in advance.

How to Study and Exam Centers

Effective preparation is the key to success on the CGBP exam. NASBITE International recommends that candidates have either two years of college-level study in any field OR two years of experience in the field of international trade before attempting the exam.

We suggest combining multiple study methods:

Review the NASBITE CGBP Practice Delineation: Start by downloading the free Practice Delineation from the NASBITE website. This document is the ultimate guide to the topics and skills covered by the exam.

Use Official NASBITE Study Materials: NASBITE offers a comprehensive study pack that includes reading materials, sample questions, and a CGBP exam prep track.

Take Practice Exams: A foundational element of your strategy should be utilizing multiple CGBP Practice Exams. This will not only help you identify knowledge gaps but also familiarize you with the format, style, and pacing of the actual multiple-choice test.

Join a Study Group or Course: Many universities, trade centers, and other trade training organizations offer CGBP exam prep courses. Consider connecting with a local college or trade association.

Focus on Cross-Domain Integration: A CGBP must understand how decisions in one domain (e.g., Supply Chain) affect another (e.g., Global Marketing or Trade Finance). Study with an eye for interconnection.

Exam Centers: The CGBP exam is primarily administered via a live online proctored format. This allows you to take the exam from your home or office, provided you meet specific technological and environmental requirements. There are no dedicated physical testing centers like Pearson VUE used for the CGBP; however, some organizations that host CGBP training may also be authorized to proctor the exam in person.
