What the Course Entails and Exam Details

To achieve the CGFM designation, candidates must pass three separate, rigorous examinations covering the core areas of government financial management. These three examinations are officially titled: 1. Governmental Environment, 2. Governmental Accounting, Financial Reporting and Budgeting, and 3. Governmental Financial Management and Control. While the term "course" is often used loosely, AGA provides official study materials, known as "Courses 1, 2, and 3 Study Guides," that map directly to these three exam areas. The comprehensive syllabus covers the complex political and financial environments specific to the public sector. It includes standard-setting bodies for government (like GASB and FASAB), distinct governmental accounting models, budget execution, public policy implications, performance measurement, internal controls, management's responsibility, and audit standards.

What to Expect in the Final Exam

The CGFM examination is administered through Pearson VUE professional testing centers, offering flexibility for candidates worldwide. Each of the three CGFM examinations (Examination 1, 2, and 3) is a multiple-choice test consisting of 115 questions. Candidates are allotted 2 hours and 15 minutes (or 135 minutes) to complete each exam. The minimum raw score required to pass is adjusted based on the specific version of the exam being taken, but generally, a score demonstrating a command of the materials (approximately 70% in raw accuracy across versions) is necessary. No special calculators are permitted, and all calculations required for the exam can be performed using an on-screen calculator provided by the testing software. There are no additional practical components or essays in these final exams.

How to Study and Exam Centers

Preparing effectively for the CGFM examinations requires a structured approach and dedication. The optimal study strategy is often divided into comprehensive content review and extensive practice. Start by utilizing the official study guides provided by the Association of Government Accountants (AGA), as these are the authorized, direct resources for the exam content. Complement these guides by using official CGFM practice questions and practice exams. Engaging with practice questions, simulated practice tests, or complete practice exams is crucial for diagnosing knowledge gaps and developing test-taking stamina. Dedicate consistent daily study blocks, moving through each module methodically. For scheduling and taking the actual exams, candidates must use the Pearson VUE system. Testing is available at authorized Pearson Professional Centers around the globe. In addition to physical centers, online proctoring is a widely available option for all three CGFM examinations, allowing you to test from the comfort of your home or office, provided technical requirements are met.
