What the Course Entails and Exam Details

Preparing for the CMQ/OE exam requires a deep understanding of the ASQ CMQ/OE Body of Knowledge (BoK), which covers a broad range of managerial and operational quality topics. The certification focuses on practical application and scenario-based decision-making rather than just rote memorization. Candidates must master the skills required to motivate staff, manage projects and resources, analyze situations, determine and evaluate risks, and use knowledge management tools to resolve organizational challenges. ASQ periodically updates the BoK to reflect current industry practices, with a recent update becoming effective in July 2026 that introduces modern concepts such as remote and hybrid work environments, artificial intelligence (AI), cybersecurity, and advanced problem-solving tools like 8D, CAPA, and A3. Despite these targeted updates, the core structure remains stable, encompassing seven main sections with specified weightings:

  • I. Leadership: (Approximately 28 questions) Focuses on organizational structures, leadership challenges, teams and team processes, and business governance, ethics, and compliance.
  • II. Strategic Plan Development and Deployment: (Approximately 23 questions) Covers strategic planning models, business environment analysis, and strategic plan deployment, including tactical plans and resource allocation.
  • III. Management Elements and Methods: (Approximately 26 questions) Includes management skills and abilities, communication, project management, and quality system and models (like ISO 9001).
  • IV. Quality Management Tools: (Approximately 31 questions) Covers problem-solving tools (7 quality tools, A3, 8D, CAPA), process management, and measurement (assessment and metrics).
  • V. Customer-Focused Organizations: (Approximately 22 questions) Focuses on customer identification, segmentation, and relationship management, including measuring customer satisfaction.
  • VI. Supply Chain Management: (Approximately 23 questions) Covers supplier selection, approval, risk management, performance, and improvement.
  • VII. Training and Development: (Approximately 27 questions) Includes training plans, needs analysis, material development, and effectiveness evaluation.

Successfully navigating these topics demonstrates your readiness to lead quality functions at a high level.

What to Expect in the Final Exam

The CMQ/OE final exam is a rigorous, computer-based test (CBT) that evaluates your ability to apply quality management principles to real-world situations. Understanding the exam format and rules is crucial for managing your time and stress on test day.

  • Format: The exam consists of 180 multiple-choice questions. Out of these, 165 questions are scored, and 15 are unscored pilot questions used by ASQ for future test development. These unscored questions are distributed randomly throughout the exam, and you will not know which ones they are, so you should answer every question to the best of your ability.
  • Time Limit: Candidates are given a total of 4 hours and 18 minutes (or approximately 4.3 hours) to complete the exam. Effective time management is essential to ensure you can address all questions.
  • Scoring: Your final raw score (the number of questions answered correctly) is converted into a scaled score using statistical methods to ensure fairness across different versions of the test. The ASQ CMQ/OE scaled score ranges from 100 to 750, with a minimum scaled score of 550 required to pass.
  • Rules and Resources: Notably, all ASQ certification exams, including the CMQ/OE, are open book. You are permitted to bring reference materials, such as the ASQ CMQ/OE Handbook, into the testing room. However, all materials must be permanently bound (stitching, glue, spiral binders, ring binders with brads through pages; manually stapled or unbound pages are not allowed). You can tab and highlight your books before entering the center. A basic scientific calculator is provided on-screen during the computer-based exam, or you may request a hand-held basic calculator from the test center administrator. You can also bring your own silent, battery-operated calculator, provided it is not programmable and has no alphabetic keyboard. The test center provides scratch paper and pencils, or you will use the scratchpad feature for remotely proctored exams (though the open-book nature makes center testing more common). Breaks are allowed but the exam timer will not pause, so use them sparingly.

  •  How to Study and Exam Centers

Preparation is key to conquering the CMQ/OE exam. A successful study plan typically spans four to six weeks and utilizes a combination of resources.

  • Study Materials: The primary resource is the official The ASQ Certified Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence Handbook, which aligns perfectly with the Body of Knowledge. Supplement your reading with ASQ’s CMQ/OE Question Bank and consider enrolling in ASQ’s self-paced e-learning or live virtual exam preparation courses. These resources help you identify weak areas through pretests and practice question explanations.
  • Practice Exams: Engaging in practice exams is perhaps the most crucial step. Use official ASQ simulators or reliable third-party practice test providers (such as Mometrix, Quality Gurus, or test prep centers) to take timed, full-length mock exams. This not only builds your endurance but also familiarizes you with the wording of ASQ questions and scenarios. When practicing, simulate the open-book conditions and train yourself to find information quickly using your tabbing system, rather than trying to read full chapters during the test. Analyze your performance, review missed questions and their rationales, and focus your study on areas where you lack hands-on experience.
  • Scheduling and Centers: The CMQ/OE exam is administered globally by ASQ's testing partner, Prometric. Exams are typically offered during designated "testing windows" throughout the year (e.g., January, March, May, July, September, November). You must first apply for the certification and pay the examination fee (approximately $568 for members, higher for non-members) through the ASQ website. Once approved, you will receive eligibility instructions to schedule your computer-based exam at a local Prometric testing center via their website, Prometric.com. Ensure you arrive at the testing center at least 30 minutes early with a valid, government-issued photo ID. Paper-based testing (PBT) may be available in specific high-demand regions where Prometric does not have centers, or for translated exams (available in Spanish, Mandarin, Portuguese, Korean, etc., in certain locations). Check the current ASQ website for available languages and center locations.
