What the Course Entails and Exam Details

The CPSI certification course and final exam are built upon deep technical knowledge derived from the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards and the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) "Handbook for Public Playground Safety." A strong understanding of these documents is vital. The practice exam will test your mastery of five core competency domains:

• Hazard Identification (45% of the exam): This largest domain focuses on recognizing and ranking hazards according to injury potential. It covers identifying specific equipment-related hazards, applying standards to remove them, understanding injury causes, patterns, and methods of corrective action. Critical topics include testing methods for entanglement, protrusions, impalement, head-entrapment, crush/shear, and ensuring compliance with ADA accessibility requirements for equipment.
• Protective Surfacing (20% of the exam): You will be tested on your knowledge of various playground surfacing materials, their critical height ratings, impact attenuation requirements (ASTM F1292), accessibility performance (ASTM F1951), and selection guide (ASTM F2223). This includes field testing methods to verify compliance, CPSC guidelines on critical height, use zones, fall heights, and essential maintenance practices for surfacing.
• Playground Environment (7% of the exam): This domain covers child development concepts, age-appropriateness of equipment, site selection, drainage, shade, and overall playground layout and play environment design.
• Inspection and Maintenance (14% of the exam): You will need to know how to develop and utilize effective audit and inspection forms, factors affecting inspection frequency, procedures for taking equipment out of service, and methods of corrective action and routine maintenance to ensure ongoing safety.
• Risk Management (14% of the exam): This area assesses your ability to establish and implement a comprehensive safety program based on a standard of care. Key topics include record-keeping and storage, injury reporting, compliance documentation from manufacturers, creating site history files, conducting safety audits, prioritizing hazards, and accident investigation.

•  What to Expect in the Final Exam

The final CPSI exam is a rigorous assessment consisting of 100 multiple-choice questions. Of these, 95 are scored, and 5 are unscored pre-test questions used for future exam development. Candidates have a two-hour (2-hour) time limit to complete the examination. The exam is closed-book, and candidates cannot bring any reference materials. A passing score is required to achieve certification, which is valid for three years. The exam is available in both paper/pencil format, typically offered on Day 3 of the in-person CPSI course, and as a computer-based test (CBT).

 How to Study and Exam Centers

Effective preparation is key to passing the CPSI exam. While practice tests are a vital part of your strategy, they should not be your only tool. Here is a recommended study plan:

• Start with Advanced Reading: The National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) strongly recommends that all candidates complete advanced reading of the CPSI Course Manual and Field Guide for at least three weeks before their scheduled course or exam. These materials contain the foundational knowledge you need.
• Take the Official Course: Participating in either the in-person CPSI certification course or the online blended learning course is highly encouraged. These courses provide expert instruction, in-depth analysis of the standards, practical exercises, and a hands-on playground site visit (in-person only).
• Utilize the NRPA Online Practice Exam: The NRPA offers an online CPSI practice exam. This tool is designed to help you become familiar with the exam system, question style, and testing environment. Use it to identify areas where you need further study. Multiple attempts are allowed, but remember, performance on the practice exam does not guarantee success on the official certification test.
• Review ASTM Standards and CPSC Guidelines: The core of the exam is based on these documents. Ensure you have a strong grasp of how to read, interpret, and apply the specific standards and guidelines in real-world scenarios.

Where to Take the Exam:

• In-Person (Paper/Pencil): If you register for the full in-person CPSI course, you will typically take the paper/pencil exam on the morning of Day 3, following the two days of instruction.
• Computer-Based Testing (CBT): Candidates can also choose to take the CBT only. This exam is administered through PSI Services at over 200 testing centers across the United States and internationally. Once registered, candidates have a 90-day window to schedule and complete their exam.
