What the Course Entails and Exam Details

Preparing for the CST exam requires a deep dive into both the scientific principles and the practical applications of surgical technology.

The syllabus is heavily focused on perioperative care, meaning you will be tested extensively on preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative procedures.

Candidates must master basic sciences, which include anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, microbiology, and surgical pharmacology.

Additionally, the exam covers crucial ancillary duties such as equipment sterilization, instrument identification, handling of biohazardous materials, and maintaining the sterile field.

You will also need to demonstrate a strong understanding of various surgical specialties, ranging from general surgery and orthopedics to neurosurgery and cardiovascular procedures.

What to Expect in the Final Exam

The final CST exam is a rigorous, computer-based test consisting of 175 multiple-choice questions.

Out of these 175 questions, 150 are scored, while the remaining 25 are unscored pretest questions used to evaluate new items for future exams.

You will be given a maximum time limit of exactly four hours to complete the test, which requires steady pacing and strong time-management skills.

The passing score fluctuates slightly depending on the exact form of the exam, but candidates generally need to correctly answer around 102 of the 150 scored questions to pass.

The exam environment is strictly proctored, meaning no personal items, mobile phones, or reference materials are allowed in the testing room, and you must present two forms of valid identification before beginning.

How to Study and Exam Centers

Success on the CST exam comes down to consistent, structured preparation and the utilization of varied study methods.

We highly recommend taking multiple full-length CST practice exams to build your testing stamina and familiarize yourself with the phrasing of the NBSTSA questions.

Create flashcards for difficult anatomy terms, surgical instruments, and microbiology concepts to reinforce your memory through active recall.

Joining a study group with your peers and utilizing the official study guides provided by the Association of Surgical Technologists (AST) can also significantly boost your confidence.

When you are ready to test, the exam is administered through PSI testing centers.

You can schedule your test online and take it at one of the hundreds of secure, physical PSI testing locations nationwide, or, in some cases, via Web-Based Testing (WBT) directly at your accredited educational institution.
