What the Course Entails and Exam Details

Preparing for the CTRS exam requires a deep understanding of the NCTRC Job Analysis, which details the six core content areas that every recreational therapist must master.

Your preparation course and study materials should cover these key sections:

  • Professionalism (12%): Understanding professional ethics, standards of practice, regulatory requirements, and the importance of professional development and cultural competency.
  • Assessment (19%): Learning how to conduct intake assessments, gather primary and secondary data, apply developmental and diagnostic characteristics, and use assessment results to establish client outcomes.
  • Planning (18%): Creating individualized care plans and program services by setting realistic goals and objectives, selecting appropriate interventions, and determining program modifications.
  • Implementation (25%): Delivering therapeutic recreation services while maintaining safety and managing risks, leading and facilitating activities, and monitoring client progress during programs.
  • Evaluation and Documentation (16%): Mastering techniques to evaluate individual client progress, complete concise progress notes, communicate with healthcare teams, and document incidents.
  • Administration (10%): Adhering to agency policies and regulations, managing personnel and volunteers, and contributing to the overall management of therapeutic recreation services.

This comprehensive set of skills ensures you can apply the therapeutic recreation process from start to finish.

What to Expect in the Final Exam

The actual NCTRC certification examination is a standardized, computer-based test (CBT) designed to assess a candidate's entry-level knowledge and skills in therapeutic recreation.

Here is a breakdown of the official exam format and structure:

  • Exam Format: The test consists of 120 multiple-choice questions.
  • Scoring: Only 100 questions are scored. The remaining 20 questions are unscored pretest questions used for future exam development. You will not know which questions are scored.
  • Passing Score: The exam is scored on a scaled range from 200 to 500. You must achieve a scaled score of at least 293 to pass.
  • Time Limit: You are allowed 3 hours (180 minutes) to complete the examination.
  • Availability: The exam is offered through a network of test centers and via live remote proctoring. NCTRC currently operates on a continuous testing model, with five testing windows distributed throughout the year (typically in March, May, July, September, and November).

How to Study and Exam Centers

Effective preparation is the key to conquering the CTRS exam. Use these actionable study strategies to build your confidence and knowledge base.

First, create a structured study plan. Allocate specific time slots to focus on each of the six content areas, spending more time on your weaker topics.

Second, leverage multiple resources. While your old textbooks are valuable, supplement your studies with current study guides, professional journals, and online modules.

Third, practice active recall. Utilize flashcards for terminology and standards, and regularly take practice quizzes. Official practice exams from NCTRC are highly recommended as they simulate the actual test structure and difficulty.

Fourth, simulate exam conditions. Take at least one full-length practice test under timed, 3-hour conditions to build your endurance and improve your time management.

Regarding Exam Centers: The exam is administered globally by Pearson VUE. Once you have been approved for professional eligibility by NCTRC, you can register and schedule your exam through Pearson VUE. You have two primary options:

  • Physical Testing Centers: You can take the exam at a physical, proctored Pearson VUE test center located near you.
  • Live Remote Proctoring (OnVue): For those who prefer to test from home, live remote proctoring is also available, where you are proctored online through your own webcam.
