About this Exam

The CompTIA A+ certification is the industry standard for establishing a career in information technology. It is a performance-based validation of the foundational skills required of today’s IT professionals. This certification proves an individual's ability to troubleshoot and problem-solve a wide range of issues, from networking and operating systems to mobile devices and security. The CompTIA A+ exam is designed for individuals looking to land an entry-level IT position, typically recommended for those with 9 to 12 months of hands-on experience in the lab or field, or equivalent training. It is the preferred qualifying credential for technical support and IT operational roles.

What the Course Entails and Exam Details

To earn the CompTIA A+ certification, candidates must pass two separate exams: Core 1 (220-1101) and Core 2 (220-1102). A practice course or study guide aligns its syllabus with the official CompTIA objectives for both tests.

The Core 1 exam focuses on hardware and networking. Its primary topics include mobile devices, networking technology, hardware components, virtualization, cloud computing, and hardware/network troubleshooting. You will learn to identify, use, and connect hardware devices and understand the basics of networking protocols and wireless connection types.

The Core 2 exam shifts focus to operating systems and software. Its key domains are operating systems (installing and configuring Windows, Mac, Linux, and mobile OS), security (identifying and protecting against vulnerabilities), software troubleshooting (resolving PC and mobile device application issues), and operational procedures (best practices for safety, communication, and professionalism). Together, these exams verify a candidate’s readiness to manage modern IT infrastructure.

What to Expect in the Final Exam

The final CompTIA A+ exams are rigorous and test both theoretical knowledge and practical application. Each exam (Core 1 and Core 2) has a maximum of 90 questions. You are given 90 minutes to complete each test. The exam format is a combination of standard multiple-choice questions (single and multiple response), drag-and-drop scenarios, and performance-based questions (PBQs). PBQs are interactive simulations that require you to perform a task or solve a problem within a simulated IT environment, directly testing your hands-on skills.

The passing score requirements are different for each exam. For Core 1 (220-1101), you must achieve a minimum score of 675 on a scale of 100-900. For Core 2 (220-1102), you need a minimum score of 700 on the same 100-900 scale. Both exams must be passed to become certified. During the exam, you must follow strict proctoring rules, which include not leaving your seat, not speaking aloud, and ensuring your testing area is clear of all unauthorized materials.

How to Study and Exam Centers

To prepare effectively, adopt a multifaceted study strategy. Begin by thoroughly reviewing the official CompTIA A+ exam objectives for both Core 1 and Core 2 to understand what is required. Utilize comprehensive study guides, video-based training courses, and, crucially, hands-on practice. Build a computer, set up virtual machines to practice with different operating systems, and use simulations or virtual labs to master performance-based scenarios.

Regularly taking CompTIA A+ practice exams is one of the most actionable study methods. Practice exams familiarize you with the question formats, time constraints, and difficulty level of the real test. Analyze your practice results to identify weak areas and dedicate focused study time to those specific topics. Create mnemonic devices for complex lists like port numbers or troubleshooting steps.

You can take the official CompTIA A+ exams in two ways. The first option is online testing through Pearson VUE’s OnVUE platform. This allows you to take the proctored exam from the convenience of your home or office, provided you meet the strict system and environment requirements. The second option is in-person testing at one of the thousands of Pearson VUE authorized testing centers located worldwide. Many schools and training centers are also authorized testing locations. You must schedule your exam in advance through your CompTIA candidate account.
