Additional Information

What the Course Entails and Exam Details

This event evaluates knowledge across the standard Hospitality and Tourism Career Cluster. While not a conventional "course," preparation involves mastering the following instructional areas:

  • Communications: Both interpersonal and workplace communication skills.

  • Economics: Understanding demand, economic impact, and global trends.

  • Marketing and Management: The core of the event, including product mix, promotion, selling, and general management functions.

  • Customer Relations: Strategies for satisfying customer needs and resolving conflicts.

  • Financial Analysis: Interpreting basic data relevant to the industry.

Students are expected to demonstrate critical thinking, problem-solving, teamwork, and presentation skills through two primary methods: a written exam and a collaborative oral presentation.

What to Expect in the Final Exam

The full DECA Travel and Tourism competition is a two-part event, and the final score is a combination of both.

Part 1: The Written Cluster Exam

Each team member must take a 100-question, multiple-choice 'Hospitality and Tourism Cluster Exam'. The questions are objective and cover the instructional areas mentioned above. Students are typically allotted approximately 90 minutes to complete the exam. Each member’s score is calculated, and the two scores are averaged to produce a single team score. It's essential to check the specific guidelines for your region, as a combined score of 70% or better on both parts is often required for recognition.

Part 2: The Decision Making Case Study

After the written exam, the team is presented with a case study scenario. This scenario details a business problem or situation involving a travel and tourism operation.

  • Preparation: Teams are given 30 minutes to review the scenario and collaborate to develop a solution. They can make notes during this time.

  • Presentation: Teams meet with a judge, who acts as a business executive. The team has 15 minutes to present their solution, during which both members must participate. The judge will ask follow-up questions within this time frame.

The oral presentation is weighted twice (2 times) the value of the averaged exam score in determining the final rankings.

How to Study and Exam Centers

How to Study

Effective preparation requires a balanced approach, targeting both components.

  • For the Written Exam: Utilize online DECA resources, which offer free practice tests from previous years. Practice with these, timing yourself to build stamina. Use flashcard apps to memorize key terms and performance indicators for the Hospitality and Tourism Cluster. Identify weak areas and research them specifically.

  • For the Case Study: Regular role-play practice is vital. Access sample case studies from the DECA website or official prep platforms. Practice reading a scenario, identifying the core issue, developing a structured plan (e.g., using a SWOT analysis), and presenting it in a clear, confident, professional manner. Both team members must practice active communication, listening, and sharing presentation time equally.

Exam Centers

It is important to understand the difference between practice and competition.

  • Practice Exams: These are available through DECA's official resources, advisors, and various online prep platforms. They are usually taken online in a flexible, self-paced environment from your home or school.

  • Actual Competition Exams: The real, official DECA competition exams and case study role-plays are administered as part of official DECA conferences. These include District/Regional, State/Provincial, and finally, the International Career Development Conference (ICDC). They are not taken at general testing centers like Pearson VUE. Students must be members of a DECA chapter and qualify through lower-level competitions to advance to the next stage.
