This training is an immersive, 24-hour course that blends classroom learning with vigorous practical, in-water sessions. Candidates begin by passing physical prerequisites, which include continuous swimming, a feet-first surface dive to retrieve a 10-pound brick from depth, and treading water without using their arms. The comprehensive curriculum goes beyond basic rescue skills. Key pillars of the course include proactive surveillance techniques like the signature 10/20 Protection™ Standard (10 seconds to scan a zone, 20 seconds to reach a guest). You will learn active and unconscious water rescue methods, full spinal injury management, full water extrication, and a "Healthcare Provider" level of critical life-saving skills. This integrated approach combines Standard First Aid, CPR for adult, child, and infant, Automated External Defibrillation (AED), and the unique use of Emergency Oxygen Support into a single license. E&A emphasizes realistic scenarios, often using actual people rather than mannequins to build authentic confidence and skill mastery.

What to Expect in the Final Exam

The final exam is a comprehensive evaluation designed to ensure students have fully mastered both the knowledge and the technical skills required to be a professional lifeguard. The process includes two primary components: a written exam and a final practical test-out.

First, you must pass a comprehensive multiple-choice written exam. This exam covers all theoretical aspects of the ILTP® course, including aquatic risk management, legal responsibilities, the physiology of drowning, first aid protocols, and CPR/AED application. The written exam requires an 80% or better passing score.

Second, and equally important, is the final practical test-out. This is where you demonstrate, in-water and on-deck, your competency in every skill taught. Instructors will evaluate your individual performance in scenarios, as well as your ability to work within a team during complex, multiple-rescuer emergencies. You will be expected to execute water entries, active guest rescues, unconscious guest management, on-deck care, and proper team communication without hesitation and at a high standard of care. There are no definitive time limits for the final scenarios, as they are based on performance competency.

Study Strategies: Use the comprehensive ILTP® textbook and any provided eLearning modules as your primary resource. Go through each chapter and create flashcards for key terms, drowning stages, legal principles, and the steps for CPR, AED, and first aid. Make sure you understand the "why" behind every action.

Practical Practice: This is critical. Attend every class session. Use open pool time to master your prerequisites and rescue techniques. Partner with classmates to practice the specific team scenarios. Drill yourself on the 10/20 scanning standard whenever you are near a body of water. Visualize yourself responding to different types of emergencies to build mental readiness.

Taking the Exam: The Ellis and Associates Lifeguard Training final exam is not taken at general test centers like Pearson VUE. Instead, it is administered on-site by certified E&A Lifeguard Instructors at authorized aquatic facilities. You take the exam at the facility where you complete the full training course. These can include waterparks, community centers, YMCAs, or private aquatic facilities that participate in the E&A risk management program. Your course registration will detail the specific physical testing location.
