While the test is tailored to the context of firefighting, it does not assess your ability to fight fires. Instead, it measures your proficiency in four core cognitive areas. The FCTC Written Test encompasses:

• Recall and Comprehend Verbal and Visual Information: This section evaluates your memory and observation skills. You will be required to watch short videos and answer questions based on the scenarios, testing your ability to recall details, make immediate decisions, and follow instructions.

• Apply Mechanical Reasoning: This section assesses your ability to understand and apply fundamental mechanical concepts. Topics include, but are not limited to, fluid dynamics, levers, belt and pulley systems, rope and pulley systems, gears, and interpreting mechanical diagrams.

• Solve Mathematical Problems: The math section tests your fundamental numerical skills, which are vital for apparatus operation and medical dosing. The topics covered include addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, angles, area, volume, algebra, geometry, decimals, fractions, percentages, and ratios.

• Recall and Comprehend Technical Information from Written Materials: This is the largest and most challenging section, testing your reading comprehension and long-term recall. It measures your ability to digest, retain, and recall technical data from various fire service-related texts, such as standard operating procedures, manuals, and training materials.

What to Expect in the Final Exam

The FCTC Written Test is a standardized, computerized examination administered in a controlled testing environment. Candidates should know exactly what to expect on test day.

• Format: The exam is 100 multiple-choice questions, which must be completed within a strict two-and-a-half-hour window. This is divided into a mandatory 30-minute study period where you are provided technical essays to read, underline, and take notes on, followed by a 120-minute timed exam. Your study notes are collected before the timed exam begins, which means you must answer a portion of the 100 questions entirely from memory.

• Scoring: Every question is weighted equally, and there is no penalty for incorrect answers. The passing score is 70%. Your score is added to your profile on the FCTC SEL and remains valid for exactly one year from your test date.

• Testing Protocol: All testing supplies, including a non-graphing calculator for the math portion (though some candidates prefer to master mental math), are provided at the center. No outside materials or electronics are permitted. Proctors are present throughout the exam to enforce these rules. Candidates are permitted one retake every 30 days.

• Simulate Test Conditions: Practice taking full-length, timed exams to build stamina and manage your time effectively, especially the critical 30-minute reading period.

• Exam Centers: The FCTC Written Test must be taken in person at an authorized FCTC testing facility. FCTC has dedicated centers in several locations, including Sacramento and South El Monte, California. You must register in advance through your FCTC candidate account to schedule your test. While they use proctored environments, the FCTC process does not currently utilize third-party portals like Pearson VUE for this specific test.
