What the Course Entails and Exam Details

The IB History HL syllabus focuses on global history, encouraging students to think from multiple perspectives while specializing in a specific regional history.

Students delve into a prescribed subject, such as the move to global war, rights and protests, or conflict and intervention.

Alongside the prescribed subject, learners explore two world history topics, which often include the rise and rule of authoritarian states, the causes and effects of 20th-century wars, or the Cold War superpower tensions.

What sets the Higher Level apart from the Standard Level is the deep dive into an HL regional option, where students study the history of a specific region, such as the Americas, Europe, Africa and the Middle East, or Asia and Oceania, in much greater detail.

Additionally, the curriculum includes an Internal Assessment (IA), which is a historical investigation where students research and write an essay on a historical topic of their own choosing.

What to Expect in the Final Exam

The IB History HL final evaluation consists of three heavily essay-based written examinations and one internal assessment.

Paper 1 is a one-hour exam focused on source analysis, where students evaluate historical documents related to their prescribed subject to test their comprehension, cross-referencing, and analytical skills.

Paper 2 is a one-and-a-half-hour exam requiring students to write two extended response essays based on their two chosen world history topics.

Paper 3 is exclusive to HL students; it is a rigorous two-and-a-half-hour exam where candidates must write three comprehensive essays based on their chosen regional option.

Exams are scored on the standard IB scale of 1 to 7.

While a score of 4 is generally considered a passing grade for diploma requirements, competitive universities often look for scores of 5, 6, or 7. Time management is heavily tested, as students must quickly organize their thoughts and draft structured arguments under strict time limits.

How to Study and Exam Centers

To succeed in the IB History HL exam, regular and timed practice is absolutely essential.

Students should rely heavily on past papers to familiarize themselves with the phrasing of essay prompts and the demands of source-based questions.

Creating detailed mind maps, memorizing key dates and historiography (the perspectives of different historians), and outlining essay structures will greatly improve information retention.

Study groups can also be incredibly helpful for debating historical interpretations, which is a key skill required for top marks.

Regarding exam centers, IB exams cannot be taken independently or online; they must be taken in person at an authorized IB World School.

Students typically sit for these exams at their own enrolled high school during the official IB examination sessions, which take place globally in either May or November.
