About this Exam

The Kaplan Securities Industry Essentials (SIE) Practice Exam is a crucial tool designed to mirror the structure, content, and difficulty of the actual SIE exam administered by FINRA (Financial Industry Regulatory Authority). The SIE is the introductory-level exam required for anyone aspiring to enter the securities industry, serving as a prerequisite for most specialized license exams. It is designed to test a candidate's fundamental knowledge of the securities industry, including basic products, risks, regulatory structure, and prohibited practices. This practice test is geared towards both prospective industry professionals and students seeking an entry point into financial services.

What the Course Entails and Exam Details

This practice exam comprehensive covers the core domains defined by FINRA for the official SIE. Kaplan's study materials and practice tests are structured to replicate the syllabus, which is divided into four main sections:

  • Section 1: Knowledge of Capital Markets (16%): Regulatory entities, agencies, and market structure.

  • Section 2: Understanding Products and Their Risks (44%): Equity securities, debt instruments, options, investment companies, and alternative investments.

  • Section 3: Understanding Trading, Customer Accounts, and Prohibited Activities (31%): Different types of trade orders, account types (cash, margin, retirement), anti-money laundering (AML), and prohibited practices like insider trading.

  • Section 4: Overview of Regulatory Framework (9%): SRO (Self-Regulatory Organization) registration, licensing requirements, and associated person regulations.

What to Expect in the Final Exam

The actual SIE exam is a standardized test consisting of 75 multiple-choice questions.

In addition to these 75 scored questions, the exam includes 10 unscored "pretest" questions that appear randomly. These pretest items do not affect your final score but are used by FINRA to test the validity of future exam questions.

You are given 1 hour and 45 minutes (105 minutes) to complete the full 85 questions.

To pass the SIE, you must achieve a score of at least 70%.

How to Study and Exam Centers

Effective preparation is key. Candidates should use a structured study approach:

  1. Read and Review Kaplan Study Material: Utilize Kaplan’s comprehensive SIE textbook and study guides before attempting practice questions.

  2. Take Diagnostic and Topic Exams: Assess your strong and weak points early using the question bank. Focus on understanding why an answer is correct, not just memorizing.

  3. Simulate the Full Exam: The Kaplan SIE Practice Test should be taken under timed conditions, without notes, to build stamina and identify pacing issues.

  4. Review Rationales: After the test, carefully review the explanations for every answer choice (correct and incorrect).

The actual SIE exam is administered primarily at Prometric testing centers. Candidates are usually required to schedule their exam through FINRA via the CRD (Central Registration Depository) system, often with the support of a sponsoring firm, though sponsorship is not required to take the SIE itself. Prometric offers numerous physical testing locations globally. Online proctoring is sometimes available, depending on the current policy.
