About this Exam

Part One: Theory and Guidelines. This is an open-book, multiple-choice or true-false test, typically containing around 130 questions. It assesses your theoretical understanding of the concepts presented in the General Guidelines. You are encouraged to reference the document while you take this section.

Part Two: Page Quality (PQ) Assessment. In this practical section, you will evaluate a set of live webpages (often seven to ten) and assign them a Page Quality score based on elements like the quality of Main Content (MC), the presence of Supplementary Content (SC), the reputation of the website, and the Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness (E-A-T) of the creator.

Part Three: Needs Met (NM) Rating. This is frequently cited as the most challenging section. Candidates are given specific user queries and a list of corresponding result blocks. You must use a detailed scale, ranging from "Fails to Meet" to "Fully Meets," to rate how well each result satisfies the user's intent. Crucially, some or all of this section must be completed while simulating a mobile device, as search engines place great emphasis on the mobile user experience. Candidates must pass each of the three parts to proceed, with Part Three often requiring a high minimum score of 80% to 85% to demonstrate proficiency.

How to Study and Exam Centers

Preparation is the critical difference between passing and failing this exam.

Study Strategies:

  • Read the Guidelines multiple times. Your first read should be a general overview to understand the scope. Your second read should be meticulous, where you take detailed notes and highlight key definitions. Your third read should focus entirely on the provided examples.
  • Create visual aids. Many candidates benefit from making their own flowcharts for PQ and NM decisions. Map out how to identify YMYL pages or when to use a "Fully Meets" rating.
  • Practice with example tasks. Companies like Appen often provide un-graded practice tasks in their portal. Use these to get comfortable with the rating interface and the decision-making process.

There are no physical exam centers. The Leapforce Rater Quality Exam is 100% online. After your initial application is accepted and you pass basic screening, you will receive an email containing detailed instructions and a link to the secure online testing portal.
