What the Course Entails and Exam Details

Candidates will delve into critical LCSW syllabus areas such as Human Development, Diversity, and Behavior in the Environment; Assessment, Diagnosis, and Treatment Planning; Psychotherapy and Clinical Interventions; and Professional Relationships, Values, and Ethics. TDC provides numerous quizzes organized by topic to reinforce learning and multiple full-length mock exams that mirror the actual ASWB clinical test experience.

 What to Expect in the Final Exam

It is important to understand that while TDC provides preparation, the actual licensing exam is administered by the ASWB. The ASWB Clinical Exam consists of 170 multiple-choice questions. Of these, 150 are scored, and 20 are pretest items being vetted for future exams; however, you will not know which are which.

You are given precisely four hours to complete the computerized test. The exam heavily utilizes clinical vignettes and "First/Next" or "Most/Best" scenario questions, requiring you to apply your clinical judgment to solve real-world practice dilemmas. Passing scores are determined through an algorithmic scaling process, but generally, candidates need to answer approximately 102 to 107 questions correctly out of the 150 scored items.

 How to Study and Exam Centers

Effective study for the LCSW exam requires a balance of content review and strategy application. We recommend following the TDC structured study plan linearly, dedicating consistent time each week. Utilize the audio lectures for passive learning during commutes, and actively engage with the quizzes. Pay close attention to the TDC rationales provided for every question in their mock exams.

Understanding why the correct answer is best, and why the distractors are wrong, is more important than simply getting the answer right during practice. To take the actual ASWB exam, you must first apply for licensure through your specific state’s social work board. Once approved, you will register with the ASWB and receive an Authorization to Test (ATT).

The exam itself is taken at Pearson VUE professional testing centers. These standardized physical centers are located throughout the United States and Canada. You must schedule your appointment in advance at a location convenient for you.
