What to Expect in the Final Exam

The actual MCHES exam is a comprehensive assessment of your ability to apply advanced concepts to real-world scenarios. It is a computer-based examination. Candidates are given a total of 3 hours (180 minutes) to complete the test. The exam consists of 165 multiple-choice questions.

Out of the 165 questions, 150 are scored questions that determine your final outcome. The remaining 15 are non-scored, pretest questions being evaluated for future exams. These pilot questions are mixed throughout the test and are indistinguishable from the scored questions. To pass, you must meet a scaled passing score determined by NCHEC.

How to Study and Exam Centers

Preparation for the MCHES exam requires a disciplined and thorough study approach. A vital part of your strategy should include utilizing an MCHES Practice Exam. Practice exams are essential for familiarizing yourself with the format, timing, and difficulty level of advanced scenario-based questions.

Candidates should also study the official NCHEC publication, the Health Education Specialist: A Companion Guide for Professional Excellence, focusing heavily on the advanced-level examples. We recommend forming study groups with other experienced professionals and focusing your review on the Advanced Areas of Responsibility (Leadership/Management and Evaluation/Research often carry significant weight).

The MCHES exam is administered through computer-based testing centers. NCHEC partners with Pearson VUE, which provides hundreds of physical testing locations across the United States. Furthermore, live remote proctoring options may be available through Pearson VUE (OnVUE), allowing you to take the exam from a secure, private room in your home or office.
