About this Exam

Welcome to your first step toward mastering mental toughness and becoming a catalyst for positive change in your organization. The Master Resilience Training Level 1 (MRT Level 1) certification is an elite program designed to empower leaders with the core competencies of resilience. Originally developed for the U.S. Army’s Comprehensive Soldier and Family Fitness (CSF2) program, this course is designed for individuals poised to become trainers themselves. It is primarily targeted at Non-Commissioned Officers (NCOs), officers, and Department of the Army (DA) Civilians, although contracting opportunities exist for qualified performance coaches. This certification doesn’t just teach you how to bounce back; it trains you how to thrive in the face of adversity and, crucially, how to teach others to do the same. This practice test guide is your roadmap to success in completing this challenging course.

What the Course Entails and Exam Details

The MRT Level 1 course is an intensive, immersive experience that focuses on a "train-the-trainer" model. Over the course of approximately 10 days, you will delve deep into the science of positive psychology and performance enhancement. You are not just learning definitions; you are mastering how to facilitate these skills in small groups.

The curriculum is structured around six core MRT competencies:

  • Self-Awareness: Identifying thoughts, emotions, and behaviors.
  • Self-Regulation: Managing impulses, emotions, and behaviors to achieve goals.
  • Optimism: Noticing the goodness in self, others, and situations.
  • Mental Agility: Thinking flexibly, accurately, and thoroughly.
  • Strengths of Character: Identifying and top-level character strengths in self and others.
  • Connection: Building strong relationships through effective communication.

Within these competencies, you will master specific primary skills, including Hunt the Good Stuff, Detecting Icebergs, Problem Solving, Putting It In Perspective, Real-Time Resilience, and Active Constructive Responding. Your mastery of these specific skills is what will be evaluated.

What to Expect in the Final Exam

The MRT Level 1 Final Exam is not a standard standardized test; it is a holistic evaluation of your ability to understand the material and your capacity to teach it to others. The assessment typically consists of two distinct components: a written examination and a practical evaluation.

Written Component: This section usually takes the form of multiple-choice and short-answer questions. These questions focus heavily on definitions, the steps required to execute each of the primary skills, and identifying which resilience competency is being applied in specific scenarios. To pass, you must demonstrate a rigorous understanding of the theoretical foundations of the MRT program.

Practical Evaluation (The "Check-on-Learning"): This is often considered the most challenging part of the MRT course. You will be required to facilitate a specific MRT skill to a small group in a classroom setting. Evaluators will assess your ability to explain the skill clearly, your use of concrete examples, your adherence to the structured facilitation steps, and your overall confidence as a trainer. Your ability to connect with your audience and manage standard classroom dynamics is crucial.

You must achieve a passing score (typically 80% or higher) on the written exam and receive a "Go" on your practical facilitation evaluation to receive your ASI 8R (for military personnel) and become Level 1 certified.

How to Study and Exam Centers

Studying for the MRT Level 1 exam requires a dual approach: mastering the academic content and honing your facilitation skills. Do not rely solely on memorization.

  • Master the Student Guide: The official MRT student guide is your bible. Know it forward and backward. Focus on the distinct steps and key terms for every single skill.
  • Utilize MRT Level 1 Practice Tests: Using reputable practice tests is essential. Practice tests help you identify gaps in your knowledge regarding definitions, skill steps, and the relationships between the competencies. They are your best tool for mastering the written portion of the exam.
  • Practice Facilitation Aloud: The biggest pitfall is failing the practical evaluation. Practice teaching the skills to a partner, a colleague, or even a mirror. You must be able to deliver the material without relying constantly on your notes.
  • Create Your Own Scenarios: For skills like Real-Time Resilience or Active Constructive Responding, create scenario flashcards. Practice providing standard, compliant responses to various situations quickly.

Exam Centers:

Because MRT Level 1 is a highly specialized internal Army program, the final exam is not administered at commercial centers like Pearson VUE. It is administered on-site as the culminating event of the authorized MRT course. These courses are held physically at official Army installations, including the main training hub at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, and various other authorized R2 Performance Centers across the globe. You must be enrolled in an official course to take the exam.
