The Massage & Bodywork Licensing Examination (MBLEx) is
the premier standardized test for aspiring massage therapists.
Administered by the Federation of State Massage Therapy
Boards (FSMTB), it evaluates the foundational knowledge and practical
understanding required for entry-level massage professionals.
It is designed primarily for recent graduates of massage
therapy programs or individuals seeking state licensure to practice
professionally.
By passing this exam, you demonstrate to state boards and future employers that you possess the competence to provide safe and effective bodywork
What the Course Entails and Exam Details
Preparing for the MBLEx means mastering a wide array of
vital topics crucial for safe and effective practice.
The curriculum comprehensively covers anatomy and
physiology, focusing deeply on the musculoskeletal system, joint movements, and
kinesiology.
You will also explore pathology, contraindications, areas of
caution, and special populations to ensure client safety at all times.
Beyond the physical body, the syllabus includes massage and
bodywork modalities, client assessment, reassessment, and treatment planning.
Finally, professional practice guidelines, ethics,
professional boundaries, laws, and business regulations are heavily emphasized
to ensure comprehensive readiness for the professional world.
What to Expect in the Final Exam
The MBLEx is a computer-adaptive test (CAT) consisting of
exactly 100 multiple-choice questions.
You will be given an uninterrupted time limit of two hours
(120 minutes) to complete the examination.
Because it is a computer-adaptive exam, the difficulty of
each question adjusts based on your previous answers, meaning you cannot skip
questions or go back to change your answers once submitted.
The passing standard is determined by a scaled score ranging
from 300 to 900, with a minimum passing score of 600.
Strict testing rules apply on the day of the exam, including
the prohibition of personal items, phones, or reference materials in the
testing room, and you must arrive early with proper state-issued
identification.
How to Study and Exam Centers
Success on the MBLEx requires consistent and targeted
preparation over a period of several weeks or months.
Start by taking a comprehensive diagnostic practice test to
identify your weakest areas, and then dedicate focused study blocks to those
specific subjects.
Utilize flashcards for anatomy terminology, use mnemonic
devices for memorizing muscle attachments, and actively engage in hands-on
practice to solidify your kinesiology knowledge.
The exam is administered exclusively at authorized Pearson
VUE testing centers located across the country.
After receiving your Authorization to Test (ATT) from the
FSMTB via email, you can log onto the Pearson VUE website or call their
customer service to schedule your exam date and select the most convenient
physical testing location near you.
