Time Limits: Candidates are typically given 60 to 90 minutes to complete the exam.

 How to Study and Exam Centers

• Source Material: The single most important study method is to obtain and meticulously read the official, current version of the Minneapolis Fire Department SOPs/SOGs manual. Internal department exams are based verbatim on these specific documents.
• Active Reading & Highlighting: Go through the entire manual. Highlight key phrases, flowcharts, timelines, and mandatory safety requirements. Pay close attention to "Shall" (mandatory) versus "Should" (recommended).
• Create Flashcards: Convert specific rules, equipment specifications, and response times into flashcards. This is excellent for memorization.
• Scenario-Based Drills: Practice applying the rules. With other members or classmates, create scenarios (e.g., "We arrive first-due at a two-story house with smoke showing. What is our required hose line size according to SOP?") and answer by citing the correct procedure.

Exam Centers:

This is an internal, authorized-only exam. The MFD SOP Exam is not a test you schedule at an external, third-party center like Pearson VUE.

• Cadets: For new recruits, the test is administered at the Minneapolis Fire Cadet Academy as part of their required curriculum.
