Additional Information

What the Course Entails and Exam Details

This examination is not a single course, but a two-part evaluation of the skills and knowledge you acquired during your CNA training program. Your course syllabus covered critical domains, including basic nursing skills, personal care skills, mental health and social service needs, and basic restorative services. The exam will measure your proficiency across these areas, as well as your understanding of resident rights and communication techniques. It specifically tests your ability to safely perform tasks such as taking vital signs, assisting with activities of daily living (ADLs), ensuring infection control, and utilizing proper body mechanics for patient transfers.

What to Expect in the Final Exam

The Minnesota Headmaster exam consists of two independent components: the Knowledge Test and the Skills Test. You must pass both to be listed on the Minnesota Nurse Aide Registry. The Knowledge Test is a 70-question, multiple-choice exam administered in a proctored environment, typically online through the TestMaster Universe (TMU) platform. Candidates are given a maximum of two hours to complete this section, with an oral option available if pre-selected.

The Skills Test is an in-person, hands-on evaluation where a registered nurse observer assesses your ability to perform three to four randomly selected nursing assistant tasks. You will demonstrate these skills on a live actor or a manikin, depending on the specific skill, within a 30-minute time limit. One of the tested skills will always include a measurement component, such as measuring and recording a resident's pulse, respirations, or urinary output. To pass, you must successfully perform all key steps for each skill and meet the overall competency standard for that task.

How to Study and Exam Centers

Preparation is paramount for success on both the theoretical and practical sections of the Minnesota Headmaster CNA exam. We highly recommend utilizing the official Minnesota Candidate Handbook and the free 'Mock Skills' resource, both available on the Headmaster, LLC Minnesota webpage. For the knowledge portion, engage with practice tests that shuffle questions from a random bank to simulate the actual exam experience. For the skills portion, practice each of the required skills meticulously, with a special focus on vital signs, hand hygiene, and transfers. Mock skill checklists can help you verify that you can perform every single step without error under pressure.

Registration for the exam is conducted through the TMU testing platform. For those who completed a program at a Minnesota State College or University, testing often takes place at that facility or within their network of large group events. Candidates also have the option to test at various 'in-facility' test sites approved by the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) across the state. These sites can provide both 'open' events for the public and 'closed' events for their own students.
