Second is the detailed mechanics and technical specifications of the M224 60mm Light Mortar and M252 81mm Medium Mortar, including their maximum and minimum ranges and rates of fire. Thirdly, a comprehensive mastery of ammunition types, such as High Explosive (HE), Smoke, and Illumination rounds, alongside the setup and options for their multi-option and point-detonating fuzes. Fourth is standard operating procedures, including misfire and clearance drills, boresighting, and pre-fire safety checks. Finally, the course covers the tactical employment and organization of mortar units, including section and squad leadership within a weapons platoon.

 What to Expect in the Final Exam

The written portion typically features a series of multiple-choice and short-answer questions. These questions test a candidate's knowledge of technical data, such as weapon specifications, burst diameters, fuze settings, and the mathematical formulas used to generate accurate fire commands. The most critical component, however, is the hands-on practical exam. During this phase, you will be required to individually perform actions under timed, simulated combat stress. Tasks include emplacing the mortar, manipulating the weapon for large deflection and elevation changes, conducting a "reciprocal lay" with another mortar, and executing misfire procedures. Due to the precision required for the role, passing score requirements are set at a rigorous standard, typically requiring 80 percent or higher to achieve qualification. This is a closed-book examination, and candidates must memorize all specifications and procedures.

You cannot take the official MOS 0341 Gunners qualification exam online or at civilian test centers. Formal testing occurs only at designated U.S. Marine Corps advanced training schools.
