 What to Expect in the Final Exam

The NBPTS Component 1 Content Knowledge assessment is a standardized, computer-based exam. Candidates can expect a 2.5-hour testing session at a designated assessment center. The exam is structured in two parts, evaluating both broad recall and deep analytical thinking:

• Selected-Response Items (SRIs): You will encounter a section of multiple-choice questions designed to assess your breadth of content knowledge and its pedagogical application across the generalist curriculum for children aged 3-8.
• Constructed-Response Exercises (CRIs): This section requires you to provide detailed, written responses to several prompts. These exercises ask you to analyze specific educational scenarios—such as a student’s work sample, an observation of student behavior, or a transcript of student reading—and to demonstrate your ability to plan, analyze, and justify instructional decisions using evidence from the provided materials and your own deep pedagogical knowledge.

While there is no single "passing score" for Component 1 in isolation, your performance generates a score that is heavily weighted and contributes directly to your total composite score for National Board Certification. You must meet a minimum average on the Assessment Center section and a minimum average on the Portfolio section to be eligible for certification.
