What the Course Entails and Exam Details

The syllabus covers identifying functional groups, naming compounds (IUPAC rules), and understanding physical and chemical properties.

Key areas include alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, haloalkanes, alcohols, carboxylic acids, and amines.

You must master structural isomerism, geometric (cis-trans) isomerism, and reaction types such as substitution, addition, elimination, and oxidation.

The exam focuses heavily on linking structure to chemical reactivity and identifying unknown substances using chemical tests.

 What to Expect in the Final Exam

This is a 90-minute written examination worth 4 credits.

It typically consists of three multi-part questions combining short answers, drawing structural formulae, writing balanced chemical equations, and long-form explanatory paragraphs.

The exam requires you to use resource materials provided, such as the periodic table.

You are expected to accurately write equations, draw structures, and identify products formed in various reaction pathways.

Grades are awarded as Not Achieved, Achieved, Merit, or Excellence based on the quality of your responses.

Practice drawing reaction schemes connecting different organic molecules.

Complete the NCEA Level 2 Organic Chemistry Practice Exam under timed conditions to improve speed and identify knowledge gaps.

The final external examination is held at your school or an authorized NZQA testing center during the nationwide exam period in November.
