About this Exam

The NCO Distributed Leader Course (DLC) is a foundational component of the U.S. Army's Noncommissioned Officer Professional Military Education (PME). Designed as a series of progressive, sequential, and enhanced distance learning courses, it replaces the former Structured Self-Development (SSD) model.

The DLC is designed to groom Soldiers into agile, adaptive leaders capable of operating effectively in complex, ambiguous environments. Completion of specific DLC levels is a mandatory prerequisite for attendance at resident NCO PME courses, making this certification essential for career progression within the enlisted ranks. It targets all Soldiers from Private to Sergeant Major, depending on the level assigned.

What the Course Entails and Exam Details

The DLC curriculum is robust and focuses on the six NCO Common Core Competencies (NCO-C3), which are standard across all Military Occupational Specialties (MOS).

These core topics include:

  • Leadership: Covering Army leadership philosophy, mission command, critical thinking, ethics, and counseling.
  • Communications: Focusing on effective writing, oral briefings, and public speaking skills for military leaders.
  • Readiness: Emphasizing Soldier readiness, holistic health and fitness (H2F), and personal management.
  • Training Management: Detailing how NCOs plan, prepare, execute, and assess training at the unit level.
  • Operations: Introducing unified land operations, joint doctrine, and the military decision-making process.
  • Program Management: Covering administrative roles, Army programs, and support systems required for successful operations.

The course is delivered via the Army Learning Management System (ALMS). Each level ranges from approximately 34 to 47 academic hours. The structure features interactive multimedia instruction, often utilizing a scenario-driven, gamification style to challenge a Soldier’s decision-making skills.

What to Expect in the Final Exam

While the entire DLC is an instructional process, the "exam" component consists of summative assessments at the end of modules or the overall course. Because the DLC utilizes complex branching, you may find that your final assessment feels more like a practical exercise than a traditional test.

Here are the key details of the examination structure:

  • Format: The assessments are predominantly multiple-choice and scenario-based. You are presented with a tactical or administrative dilemma and must select the best course of action based on Army doctrine and leadership principles.
  • Passing Score: A minimum passing score of 80% is generally required to pass each module assessment and the final exam.
  • Time Limits: Unlike many civilian exams, DLC module assessments are typically untimed, allowing you to focus on analyzing the scenario rather than racing against a clock. However, individual course levels must be completed within a specified enrollment period, often 12 months.
  • Rules: The final exam is taken online within the ALMS portal. While it is unproctored, you are bound by the Army's academic integrity policies. Most importantly, DLC allows for multiple attempts, but failure to pass within a few attempts may require automatic unenrollment and a waiting period before you can retake the course.

How to Study and Exam Centers

Successfully passing the DLC requires a dedicated, proactive study approach.

Here are actionable strategies to prepare:

  • Analyze Doctrine: Do not just skip to the assessment. Pay close attention to the provided material, specifically related to Army Regulations (ARs), Department of the Army Pamphlets (DA PAMs), and Army Doctrine Publications (ADPs). The final answers are derived from these sources.
  • Understand the Scenarios: Pay close attention to the setup of each interactive scenario. Ask yourself: "What is the core issue here? What does the doctrine say I should do? What are the consequences of each choice?" The "most right" answer is usually the one that aligns best with standard leadership principles.
  • Take Thorough Notes: Jot down key terms, processes, and decision models (like critical thinking loops or counseling techniques) as you progress through the modules.
  • Utilize Authorized Practice: Look for mock quizzes within the course introduction or reputable, veteran-verified flashcard decks online. Focus on understanding why an answer is correct, not just memorizing the response.

Exam Centers:

The entire DLC is completed online. There is no need to travel to Pearson VUE or other physical testing centers. You take the final assessments directly through the Army Learning Management System (ALMS) portal, accessible via any computer with a Common Access Card (CAC) reader. This allows you to complete the course and exams from your unit, your home, or anywhere you have secure internet access.

Job Opportunities from the Course

While completing the DLC does not directly unlock a new job title on its own, it is a vital critical milestone within the Select, Train, Educate, Promote (STEP) program. Successful completion is a mandatory gate that allows you to attend the necessary resident training to be promoted to the next rank.

Finishing the course prepares you for, and directly leads to, the following progression and expanded roles:

  • Completion of DLC Level I: Prepares you to serve as a Team Leader (at the rank of Specialist/Corporal) and is the required prerequisite for the Basic Leader Course (BLC).
  • Completion of DLC Level II: Prepares you to serve as a Squad Leader (at the rank of Sergeant) and is the required prerequisite for the Advanced Leader Course (ALC).
  • Completion of DLC Level III: Prepares you to serve as a Platoon Sergeant (at the rank of Staff Sergeant) and is the required prerequisite for the Senior Leader Course (SLC).
  • Completion of DLC Level IV: Prepares you to serve in senior administrative or staff roles (at the rank of Sergeant First Class) and is the required prerequisite for the Master Leader Course (MLC).
