What to Expect in the Final Exam

The formal NEHA REHS/RS examination is a robust assessment designed to rigorously test your broad range of knowledge and problem-solving abilities.

The final exam format is entirely computer-based and consists of up to 250 multiple-choice questions. It is important to note that only approximately 225 of these questions are scored; the remaining questions are unscored pilot questions used for future exam development.

Candidates are allowed a total of 4 hours to complete the entire exam. The examination is generally administered in two 125-question sessions with a short break provided between the sessions.

To pass the NEHA REHS/RS exam, you must achieve a scaled score of 650 or higher. The raw score (number of questions correct) is mathematically transformed into a scaled score ranging from 0 to 900. Scaled scoring ensures that scores are comparable across different versions of the exam that might vary slightly in difficulty. Your score is determined solely by the number of correct answers, so there is no penalty for guessing. If you are taking the exam at a Pearson VUE testing center, you will typically receive your unofficial score report immediately upon completion.

How to Study and Exam Centers

Preparation is paramount for success on the demanding REHS/RS exam. A strategic approach that combines structured review with deliberate practice is recommended.

Start by creating a structured study schedule that allocates ample time to each of the content domains, focusing additional time on your weaker areas. NEHA strongly recommends utilizing their official resources, including the REHS/RS Study Guide, the REHS/RS Online Study Course, and, critically, their official online practice exams. Practice exams are invaluable for familiarizing yourself with the multiple-choice format, assessing your knowledge gaps, and practicing under time constraints. Focus not just on identifying the correct answer but also on understanding why that answer is correct and why the distractors are incorrect.

The official REHS/RS exam is administered via computer at authorized testing centers worldwide, primarily through NEHA’s testing partner, Pearson VUE. To take the exam, you must first apply and be approved for eligibility by NEHA. Once your eligibility is confirmed and you have paid the necessary fees, you will receive an Authorization-to-Test (ATT) email, which allows you to schedule your exam appointment directly through the Pearson VUE online portal or by phone. Choosing a convenient Pearson VUE center helps you manage test-day logistics and reduce stress. If you fail the exam, NEHA requires you to wait at least 90 days before your next attempt.
