About this Exam

The New South Wales Forklift Certification is a mandatory requirement for anyone wishing to operate a forklift truck (class LF) in a workplace within NSW. Administered by SafeWork NSW, this certification is a type of High Risk Work Licence (HRWL) designed to ensure all operators meet a national standard of competency and safety. The official assessment is highly demanding because the operation of forklifts is considered a high-risk activity, and proper training is critical for preventing workplace injuries and fatalities. This certification process is designed for individuals over the age of 18 seeking entry into industries like warehousing, construction, manufacturing, and transport. It equips participants with the necessary knowledge and hands-on skills to operate safely, efficiently, and legally.

What the Course Entails and Exam Details

To get your forklift certification in NSW, you cannot simply take an exam. You must first enroll in a training course with a SafeWork NSW Accredited Registered Training Organisation (RTO). The standard course usually spans two to three days and covers a comprehensive syllabus that prepares you for the National Assessment Instrument (NAI).

The core topics covered in the course, which are directly tested in the exam, include:

  • Planning the work: This section focuses on hazard identification, implementing control measures (Hierarchy of Control), assessing the working area, and reviewing site safety traffic management plans.

  • Pre-start checks: This is a crucial component. You must master how to conduct thorough visual inspections, operational checks, and how to identify and report any defects on the forklift before starting it.

  • Operation: Mastering the fundamental principles of driving, including the stability triangle, the center of gravity, load management, and operating on sloping surfaces or ramps. You will learn how to shift loads, pick up, carry, and place pallets at various heights safely.

  • Shutdown: This involves proper procedures for parking, securing the vehicle, and performing post-operation checks to leave the machine safe.

The initial training phase culminates in the RTO issuing you a Statement of Attainment for the unit TLILIC0003 – Licence to operate a forklift truck. This document is proof of your foundational competency and your eligibility to undertake the formal SafeWork NSW High Risk Work Licence assessment.

What to Expect in the Final Exam

The final certification exam, or SafeWork NSW Assessment, is administered directly by a SafeWork NSW Accredited Assessor (who might be affiliated with your RTO). This is not just a standard training company test; it is the official government-accredited assessment required for licensing.

The assessment consists of two distinct parts:

  1. Knowledge (Theory) Assessment: This is a comprehensive evaluation of your understanding of forklift safety and operation. Unlike a simple multiple-choice quiz, this test often requires short-answer written responses, diagram analysis, and calculations around load size and weight. While there is no standard uniform passing percentage, you are required to demonstrate competency in specific "Must-Do" questions to pass. If you fail these critical safety questions, you will fail the entire knowledge assessment.

  2. Practical Performance Assessment: This requires you to demonstrate that you can safely apply your knowledge in a real-world scenario. You must perform critical tasks under observation, including a full pre-start check, the complete range of standard operations (picking, carrying, stacking a load), and correct shutdown procedures. You must meet all critical "Must-Do" criteria (e.g., checking for hazards before starting the engine) to demonstrate practical competence.

You must pass both the Knowledge and Practical components of the assessment to succeed.

How to Study and Exam Centers

The key to passing the NSW Forklift Certification is thorough preparation and integrating your knowledge with practical application. The most important resources are the learner guide and study materials provided by your chosen RTO.

How to Study:

  • Master the Learner Guide: Treat your RTO’s learner guide as your primary textbook. Every topic tested in the official Knowledge assessment is covered in its pages. Read and re-read it until you have a firm grasp of all definitions and procedures.

  • Use Flashcards for Terminology: Forklift operation has specific terminology. Use flashcards to drill terms like "stability triangle," "load center distance," "data plate," and the detailed steps of the pre-start check.

  • Practice Calculations: The Knowledge test often includes basic math relating to load calculations and capacity. Practicing multiplication and basic algebra problems that appear in your course workbook is essential.

  • Take Mock Exams: Utilize all practice question banks, online quizzes, and mock exams provided by your training provider to familiarize yourself with the structure and wording of the theory questions.

  • Visualize and Rehearse: Verbally walk through the pre-start checks and entire operational process step-by-step. Rehearsing these actions mentally and out loud will solidify the process in your memory, reducing stress during the practical assessment.

Exam Centers: You cannot sit for the final high-risk assessment on your own. All training and final official assessments must be conducted through a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) accredited by SafeWork NSW. There is no central, government-run "testing facility" like Pearson VUE for this licence. When you select your RTO for the training course, they will facilitate the final assessment as part of their program, bringing in the accredited assessor to observe. After successfully passing both parts, you will receive a Notice of Satisfactory Assessment (NSA). Within 60 days of receiving this notice, you must take your NSA and proof of identity to an Australia Post outlet to submit your High Risk Work Licence application and pay the required SafeWork NSW fee.
