What the Course Entails and Exam Details

This certification path does not come with a single, standalone "course" in the traditional sense. Instead, your "course" is a self-directed study or review of specific scientific manuals, rules, and regulations, with the option to attend a prep school. The exam is structured in phases. All applicants must first pass the standard Core Exam, which tests general competency on pesticide safety, handling, equipment, arithmetic, laws, and regulations.

Following the Core, you must pass one or more specific phase exams to become a Certified Applicator in that field:

• Phase P – Household Pests: Focuses on common pests like cockroaches, fleas, silverfish, ants, rodents, and other public health pests in residential, commercial, and industrial settings.

• Phase W – Wood-Destroying Organisms: Covers control and prevention of organisms such as termites, powderpost beetles, and fungi that compromise structural integrity.

• Phase F – Fumigation: Specific to the application of lethal gases to control pests, requiring a high level of specialized knowledge and safety protocols.

To get your initial Commercial Certified Applicator card, you must pass the Core and at least one phase exam. A Structural Pest Control License, which allows you to run your own pest control business, is a further step requiring experience and passing more advanced license-level phase exams.

What to Expect in the Final Exam

Both the Certified Applicator level Core and Phase exams are multiple-choice. A passing score of 70% is required to earn your certification in any component.

The number of questions can vary by exam, but typically, they range from 50 to 100 questions. The time limit is generally around 120 minutes for each testing session. All exams are closed-book. For the Certified Applicator level, you must preregister, but fees are collected on the day of the in-person exam (check or money order only). For online exams, a convenience fee is charged in addition to the standard exam fees ($28 for the Core and $53 for each phase attempt).

• Use the NCSU Specimen Review: Pest identification is a critical, and often challenging, part of the exam, particularly for Phase P and Phase W. N.C. State University offers a dedicated "Specimen Review" session to help you study actual insect specimens.

Testing centers are both physical and virtual:

• In-Person (Raleigh and Regional): NCDA&CS administers in-person CA exams approximately three times a month in Raleigh, and east and west of Raleigh. License exams are held once a month in Raleigh only. Pre-registration is required.

• Online Portal: For the Certified Applicator (CA) level exams ONLY, an online testing service is available, allowing you to test remotely with an added fee and technological requirements. Pre-registration on the NCDA&CS portal is mandatory.
