What the Course Entails and Exam Details

This comprehensive course, often spanning over 24 to 40 hours of initial training depending on whether you also include foundational measurement, covers the entire spectrum of radon mitigation science, technology, and application. The curriculum focuses heavily on the ANSI/AARST (American National Standards Institute / American Association of Radon Scientists and Technologists) standards for mitigation in residential structures, which are the bedrock of the practice.

Core topics you will master include:

  • The science of radon entry and transport in buildings.
  • Advanced diagnostic testing, including pressure field extension and building science principles.
  • Design and proper sizing of mitigation systems, selecting correct pipe sizes and fan models.
  • Hands-on installation techniques for different building types (basement, crawl space, slab-on-grade).
  • Worker health and safety protocols to protect yourself on the job.
  • Detailed study of the relevant ANSI/AARST standards: SGM-SF-2023 (Soil Gas Mitigation Standards for Existing Homes) and MAH-2023 (Protocol for Conducting Radon and Radon Decay Product Measurements in Homes).
  • Post-mitigation testing, documentation, and quality assurance procedures.

The exam itself is a non-practical, multiple-choice assessment designed to test your understanding of these critical concepts and your ability to apply them in real-world scenarios. It is an open-standard exam, meaning you will have digital access to the essential ANSI/AARST SGM-SF and MAH standards within the exam platform to refer to, simulating in-field work and focusing on interpretation rather than pure memorization.

What to Expect in the Final Exam

Prepare yourself for a robust challenge. Starting October 1, 2024, the NRPP Radon Mitigation Specialist (RMI) Exam will consist of 95 questions. The total time allowed for the examination is typically 3 hours.

The 95 questions break down as follows:

  • 85 Scored Questions: These are the multiple-choice questions that will determine your final score, worth one point each.
  • 10 Unscored Questions: These are experimental, or "trial," questions that are not worth any points. They are included to evaluate new potential exam questions for future use. You will not be able to distinguish between scored and unscored questions, so you should approach every question with equal diligence.

Your score will be based solely on your performance on the 85 scored questions.

The exam is administered via a live remote proctoring platform, Certiverse. This means you will take the test from your own computer, but a human proctor will observe you via webcam and microphone throughout the entire session. Before you begin, the proctor will require you to present a government-issued photo ID and perform a 360-degree room scan with your camera to confirm your test-taking environment is free of any unauthorized materials. You must be alone and remain in view of the camera. The session is recorded.

You will see an immediate "Pass" or "No Pass" result upon completion. Your official exam results, once authenticated, will be emailed to you within 48-72 business hours. If you do not pass, you must wait 30 days before you can purchase and schedule another attempt. A maximum of four attempts is permitted within a 12-month period.

How to Study and Exam Centers

Successfully preparing for this exam requires a strategic, multi-faceted approach. To begin, you are required to complete an approved initial training course, which can be taken through various authorized schools either in-person, online, or in a hybrid format. These courses provide the core knowledge you need.

Once you have completed your training, your main study materials should be the official ANSI/AARST SGM-SF and MAH standards, as they are the primary references for the exam. You will have access to them during the test, but you must be intimately familiar with how to navigate, interpret, and apply their instructions quickly.

One of the most effective tools for final preparation is utilizing a high-quality NRPP Radon Mitigation Specialist Practice Exam with detailed explanations. This will allow you to:

  • Become comfortable with the formatting and language of NRPP multiple-choice questions.
  • Identify specific topic areas where your knowledge is weakest, enabling you to focus your remaining study time.
  • Simulate the time constraints and pressure of the actual exam environment, building your confidence.
  • Review comprehensive rationales for correct answers, which will reinforce your understanding of the 'why' behind the correct procedures and standard interpretations.

Exam Centers: The final exam is not taken at a physical testing center like Pearson VUE. Instead, you will register for and take the exam online through the Certiverse platform, after purchasing it directly from the NRPP website. You will be prompted to schedule a specific time for your live remote proctored session. It is critical to perform a computer check in advance to ensure your webcam, microphone, and internet connection meet the platform's technical requirements. This allows you to take the test in the comfort of your home or office, provided the space meets the strict security criteria.
