What the Course Entails and Exam Details

The MPT is composed of two distinct, integrated components, both of which are critical for future educators.

A minimum of 70% of the test focuses directly on Mathematics Content.

This section covers the mathematical concepts found throughout The Ontario Curriculum: Mathematics for Grades 3 to 9.

You will be expected to master topics in five key mathematical strands: Number Sense and Numeration, Measurement, Geometry and Spatial Sense, Patterning and Algebra, and Data Management and Probability.

At least 24% of this content is framed within a financial literacy context, evaluating your ability to apply mathematical concepts to real-world scenarios.

The remaining portion of the test, approximately 30%, is dedicated to Pedagogy.

This component assesses your knowledge of foundational concepts related to the mathematics curriculum, as well as your understanding of equitable and inclusive assessment and evaluation practices.

It covers a range of learning expectations, from planning a mathematics program to recognizing and mitigating barriers to student learning.

The MPT ensures that teachers are not only mathematically competent but also possess the pedagogical strategies to make learning effective and equitable.

What to Expect in the Final Exam

The Ontario MPT is a comprehensive, online, proctored examination.

The final exam consists of 75 multiple-choice questions in total.

Within these 75, 71 are operational questions that contribute to your final score.

There are 50 mathematics content questions and 21 pedagogy questions, directly aligning with the 70/30 weight distribution.

The remaining 4 questions are field-test questions which are included to evaluate new content and do not count towards your result.

A machine-scoring system is used to automatically evaluate your responses.

The passing requirement is ambitious but achievable: you must achieve a score of 70% or higher on each of the two components (mathematics content and pedagogy) within the same test attempt.

This ensures that successful candidates are well-rounded, possessing strong content knowledge alongside solid pedagogical skills.

Upon completion of the proctored test, which is designed with Universal Design for Learning principles, all test takers will have a total of 180 minutes to complete the exam, offering a fair and supportive testing environment for all.

After the exam, applicants will also be invited to complete a voluntary questionnaire to assess general attitudes toward mathematics.

Individual results, showing a status of "Successful" or "Not Yet Successful," are available through your MPT account within 10 days of the test date.

When you are ready to take the official exam, the MPT is administered entirely online.

Testing is delivered in an automated, proctored environment, typically via a specific online portal or a dedicated proctoring platform.
