About this Exam

The PADI Advanced Open Water Diver course is the next exciting step in your scuba diving journey, designed to advance your skills and confidence in the water. Unlike the initial Open Water Diver certification, this course focuses less on classroom time and more on practical application through a series of "Adventure Dives." It is perfect for certified Open Water Divers who want to explore new diving activities, such as deep diving, navigation, night diving, and more, all while under the supervision of a PADI Instructor. Completing this course confirms you have gained additional experience and are qualified to dive to a maximum depth of 30 meters (100 feet).

What the Course Entails and Exam Details

To earn your PADI Advanced Open Water Diver certification, you do not take a traditional, comprehensive final exam. Instead, you must complete five Adventure Dives, which are specialized dives focusing on specific skills and knowledge. Two of these dives are mandatory:

  • Deep Adventure Dive: Teaches you the techniques, planning, and safety considerations for diving between 18 and 30 meters.

  • Underwater Navigation Adventure Dive: Focuses on perfecting your compass use, kick cycles, and natural navigation skills.

You choose the remaining three dives with your instructor from a wide range of options, allowing you to tailor the course to your interests. Popular choices include Wreck Diver, Night Diver, Peak Performance Buoyancy, Search and Recovery, and Digital Underwater Imaging. For each chosen Adventure Dive, you will complete a knowledge review section in the PADI Adventures in Diving manual (or eLearning) and participate in a pre-dive briefing, followed by the actual dive where you apply the specific skills learned.

What to Expect in the Final Exam

As mentioned, there is no single, high-stakes final exam. The "exam" process is continuous and practical throughout the five Adventure Dives.

Here is how your knowledge and skills are assessed:

  • Knowledge Reviews: For each of the five Adventure Dives you select, you must complete the corresponding knowledge review section in your manual or via eLearning. Your instructor will go over your answers with you to ensure you understand the concepts before you get in the water. These reviews serve as your "quizzes."

  • Skill Performance: During each of the five Adventure Dives, your instructor will observe you performing the key skills for that specialty. For example, during the Deep Dive, you will demonstrate understanding of gas management and ascent rates. In the Navigation Dive, you must navigate a specific pattern using your compass and natural references.

  • Divemaster and Instructor Sign-off: Your final certification is awarded once you have successfully completed all five dives and your knowledge reviews have been logged and signed off by your PADI Instructor. Success is based on mastery of the skills and a demonstration of safe diving practices, not a single score.

How to Study and Exam Centers

While there is no final test, thorough preparation is key to getting the most out of your course and feeling confident during your dives.

  • Study the Material: Read the relevant sections in the PADI Adventures in Diving manual or complete the eLearning modules for the dives you've chosen. Focus on key safety points, procedures, and practical applications.

  • Review Open Water Knowledge: It's helpful to brush up on the fundamentals from your Open Water Diver course, particularly related to gas laws, decompression theory, and emergency procedures.

  • Practice Dives: The best way to "study" is by diving! If possible, do a few fun dives before starting the course to feel completely comfortable in the water with your equipment.

  • Communicate with Your Instructor: Ask questions about the dives, equipment, or any concerns you have. Your instructor is there to guide you and ensure you understand everything.

You can sign up for the PADI Advanced Open Water Diver course at any authorized PADI Dive Center or Resort worldwide. All parts of the course, including the practical training and key knowledge reviews, will be conducted directly through that facility. You can find local or destination dive centers using the PADI locator tool online.

Job Opportunities from the Course

Earning your PADI Advanced Open Water Diver certification is a significant milestone that unlocks professional pathways in the diving industry. • PADI Divemaster: The first level of PADI professional membership, enabling you to guide certified divers and assist instructors.

  • PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor: The role required to teach PADI courses, from Open Water up to Assistant Instructor.
