What the Course Entails and Exam Details

The PE Civil Construction depth section tests your ability to solve complex engineering problems and apply fundamental construction concepts to real-world scenarios.

What to Expect in the Final Exam

The actual PE Civil exam is a high-stakes, comprehensive 8-hour computer-based test (CBT).

It is administered in two 4-hour sessions, separated by a break. The first session is the Breadth section, which covers general civil engineering topics applicable to all disciplines. The afternoon session, the Depth section, is where you will tackle problems specifically focused on Civil Construction.

The exam consists of 80 multiple-choice questions total, with 40 questions in each section.

Candidates are provided with a digital copy of the NCEES PE Civil Reference Handbook during the exam, which is the only reference material allowed.

The passing score is determined through statistical analysis and is not based on a predetermined percentage. Successful completion demonstrates a professional level of competence required to practice engineering independently.
