The RAF Officer and Aircrew Selection Centre (OASC) is the rigorous assessment process designed to select individuals with the potential to become officers and aircrew in the Royal Air Force.
It is specifically designed for candidates who have passed initial application filters and are serious about a demanding career as an RAF pilot, weapon systems officer, air battle manager, or air traffic controller, or as a ground-branch officer.
This is not a traditional academic course, but rather a condensed, high-pressure evaluation of core aptitudes and leadership potential.
The selection involves several distinct phases including comprehensive medical checks, a fitness assessment, and a series of dynamic interviews.
The main aptitude portion is the Computer Based Aptitude Testing (CBAT), which measures essential cognitive skills including spatial reasoning, dynamic flight coordination, multi-tasking, memory recall, and reaction speed.
Following CBAT, successful candidates proceed to the leadership phase, involving practical leaderless group discussion, planning exercises, and command situations.
The final assessment at OASC (held at RAF Cranwell) is multi-faceted. The Computer Based Aptitude Testing (CBAT) is a full-day battery of up to 15 different tests, taken on a computer. There is no traditional ‘passing score’ for the whole thing; rather, candidates must meet specific cut-off scores for the individual roles they have applied for.
The interview phase involves an individual interview with two senior officers, lasting approximately 30-45 minutes.
The practical leadership exercises involve small group tasks where your ability to communicate, plan, and lead under pressure is observed.
Candidates must demonstrate high levels of confidence, logical thinking, and teamwork throughout the entire OASC stay.
Preparation is absolutely critical. Do not attempt OASC without dedicated practice.
For the CBAT, practice is essential. Use online flight simulation software to improve spatial awareness and coordination. There are reputable RAF aptitude test practice platforms that simulate the speed and format of the actual computer tests, particularly for dynamic monitoring and multi-tasking.
For the leadership phase, practice public speaking, read current affairs, and understand the core responsibilities of all RAF branches. Participate in team-based problem-solving scenarios if possible.
There is no physical "exam center" to choose from. OASC selection events take place exclusively at the Officer and Aircrew Selection Centre located at RAF Cranwell in Lincolnshire. You will be scheduled for a multi-day visit once your application reaches this stage.
Successfully passing OASC is the primary hurdle to beginning Phase 1 (Officer) Training at the RAF College Cranwell.
Upon completion of training, OASC graduates are commissioned as officers in the Royal Air Force and begin specialized roles including:
Pilot (Fast Jet, Rotary, Multi-Engine)
Weapon Systems Officer
Air Battle Manager
Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS) Pilot
Air Traffic Controller
Intelligence Officer
Regiment Officer
Engineering Officer
Logistics Officer
Personnel (Training) Officer
Police Officer
Flight Operations Officer
