What the Course Entails and Exam Details

To earn your Level 1 certification, you must demonstrate proficiency in two distinct, equally important areas: a written knowledge-based component and a timed, hands-on design practical.

The knowledge-based portion of the certification syllabus is extensive.

  • Flower and Foliage Identification: You must be able to visually identify a broad range of standard industry cut flowers, line flowers, mass flowers, form flowers, filler flowers, and common foliage based on their appearance.
  • Floral Terminology: You will need to understand and correctly use terms related to design principles (balance, proportion, scale, focal point), types of arrangements (symmetrical, asymmetrical, round), and day-to-day shop operations.
  • Tools and Supplies: Know the names and specific uses of essential floral tools, including floral knives, stem cutters, wire cutters, various types of floral tape, floral wire (by gauge), and different types of mechanics (like floral foam).
  • Care, Handling, and Safety: This critical section covers proper techniques for processing flowers upon arrival, including hydration, nutrition (floral food), bacterial prevention, and optimal storage conditions. It also emphasizes safety practices when working with sharp tools and chemical solutions.

The hands-on component requires you to apply this knowledge to create two specific, graded designs within a set time limit, focusing on correct mechanics, proper proportion, and time management:

A Symmetrical Triangle Arrangement (typically using nine carnations and leatherleaf foliage).

A Rose Boutonniere.

What to Expect in the Final Exam

The final certification exam is a combination of these two components. Passing both is required to receive the official TSFA Level 1 credential.

  • Part 1: Knowledge-Based Exam. This is usually a proctored, 100-question test taken via an online portal. The format includes true/false, multiple choice, matching, and visual identification questions. Candidates are typically given an hour to complete this portion. The passing score for the knowledge-based exam is 70% or higher.
  • Part 2: Hands-On Design Practical. The hands-on exam is timed. You will be provided with the standard materials needed to create the two required designs: a symmetrical triangle arrangement and a rose boutonniere. Each design is judged by a panel of evaluators based on a rubric that scores specific criteria, including correct use of mechanics (such as tape coverage and foam insertion), proportion and scale, balance, focal point, and neatness. For Level 1, the time allowed for the hands-on portion is usually very tight (e.g., 30-45 minutes total for both designs), designed to test your efficiency and confidence under pressure. You must bring your own tools, such as a floral knife, wire cutters, and stem cutters. Both designs must receive a passing score based on the rubric for you to earn the final certification.

How to Study and Exam Centers

Preparation is key to success on the TSFA Level 1 exam. Here are actionable strategies:

  • Master the Official Study Guide: TSFA provides a comprehensive knowledge-based study guide. Read it from cover to cover. Create flashcards for flower and foliage identification, tool names, and key terminology. This guide contains everything you need for the written test.
  • Watch TSFA Educational Videos: The TSFA website offers excellent videos that demonstrate the exact, step-by-step process of creating the required Symmetrical Triangle and Rose Boutonniere designs. Watch these repeatedly. Pay attention to every detail of the expert's technique.
  • Practice, Practice, Practice: The only way to master the hands-on portion is to make the arrangements. Practice making the symmetrical triangle and boutonniere until you can do them without a guide.
  • Practice with a Timer: Speed is a crucial component. Once you know the steps, time yourself. Aim to complete both designs well within the time limit. Common mistakes observed by judges often stem from rushing or lack of familiarity with proper mechanics.
  • Use the Official Grading Rubrics: Familiarize yourself with the rubrics used by the judges. This will tell you exactly which elements (like balance, focal point, or visible tape) will determine your score.

Exam Centers: The knowledge-based exam is often administered through high school floral design programs, proctored by the teacher on-site. The hands-on exam is usually conducted in two ways:

In-Person Testing: Students or professionals can register to take the hands-on practical at specific TSFA-sanctioned events or regional testing locations, which are listed on the TSFA event calendar.

Virtual Testing: For convenience, TSFA also offers a virtual hands-on option with strict protocols for setup, photography, and submission. You would create your designs in a monitored environment and submit photos for grading. All registration for both parts of the exam must be done through the TSFA website.
