About this Exam

The USDA Initial Accreditation Training (IAT) is a fundamental, mandatory educational program for licensed veterinarians in the United States who wish to become accredited by the USDA National Veterinary Accreditation Program (NVAP).

This program is designed for graduate and licensed veterinarians seeking their first USDA accreditation to perform official regulatory activities on animals.

It serves as the crucial gateway, ensuring that all accredited veterinarians have a consistent, comprehensive understanding of their roles, responsibilities, and the relevant federal regulations aimed at protecting animal health and the nation's agricultural economy.

What to Expect in the Final Exam

The USDA IAT does not conclude with a single, massive 'final exam' in the traditional sense; instead, it utilizes multiple quiz-style assessments integrated throughout the course.

The IAT is a web-based training program composed of an introduction, three veterinary accreditation lessons, four emerging and exotic diseases of animals (EEDA) lessons, and seven transboundary disease incursions (TDI) lessons, totaling 14 lessons.

Following each of these 14 distinct lessons, participants are required to take a multiple-choice quiz that specifically evaluates their comprehension of that lesson's specific content.

To successfully complete the entire IAT program and receive the necessary certificate, a minimum passing score of 80 percent is required on each and every one of these 14 individual quizzes.

Participants have multiple opportunities to review the lesson material and retake individual quizzes if they do not achieve the passing score.

Once all 14 quizzes are passed, participants will be issued a certificate of completion, which must be presented for admission to the next mandatory step: the USDA Veterinary Accreditation Orientation Program.

How to Study and Exam Centers

As a mandatory and comprehensive online course, effective preparation is key.

Start by visiting the official USDA APHIS National Veterinary Accreditation Program (NVAP) website to access the IAT course materials directly.

The study process is unique; the learning material is incorporated into the interactive lessons, so you study by engaging with the course modules, videos, and reading materials provided within the web-based interface.

Take diligent notes during each lesson, especially on regulatory procedures, disease recognition, and official form completion, as these are frequently assessed in the quizzes.

Pay close attention to the learning objectives for each module and use them as a self-assessment guide.

Since the program is fully web-based and administered directly by the USDA, there are no external, physical 'exam centers' to visit for the IAT portion; the training and all associated quizzes are completed online, allowing you to learn at your own pace from any location with internet access.

For veterinary students, the IAT is often integrated directly into their veterinary school's curriculum; for graduate veterinarians, it is accessed through the official USDA portal.

Job Opportunities from the Course

Successfully completing the USDA Initial Accreditation Training (IAT) and subsequently the Orientation Program unlocks a critical career pathway within the veterinary profession.

It is the necessary prerequisite to becoming a USDA Accredited Veterinarian.

Achieving this status is essential for numerous career paths, including:

  • USDA Accredited Veterinarian (Category I) - focus on all animals except food and fiber species, horses, birds, farmed raised aquatics, and all other livestock species
  • USDA Accredited Veterinarian (Category II) - focus on all animals, including food and fiber species
  • Private Veterinary Practitioner (performing regulatory work, e.g., health certificates)
  • State Animal Health Official (SAHO) Veterinarian
  • USDA APHIS Regulatory Veterinarian
  • Veterinary Epidemiologist (focus on regulatory diseases)
  • Foreign Animal Disease Diagnostician (FADD)

Ultimately, USDA accreditation is more than just a certificate; it is the official recognition that allows you to perform vital functions for animal and public health and open doors to specialized career opportunities in private practice, industry, and government service.
