You will learn the correct usage of nail service tools, including electric filing, and receive comprehensive training in natural nail manicures and pedicures, including basic massage techniques. Furthermore, this domain covers advanced skills such as applying, repairing, and maintaining artificial nails, specializing in sculptured nails and full-well nail tip application.

What to Expect in the Final Exam

To become licensed, you must pass two separate parts: a written (theory) exam and a practical exam. Both assessments ensure you meet the rigorous standards necessary for a safe, professional practice.

The written examination is a computer-administered test consisting of approximately 100 multiple-choice questions. Candidates are typically given 90 minutes to complete this section. The questions are designed to assess your understanding of the scientific and procedural domains mentioned above.

The practical examination is a hands-on demonstration performed in front of an evaluator. You will have approximately 100 minutes to complete a sequence of required procedures on a mannequin hand that you are responsible for bringing. The timed segments include: Set up and client protection (10 minutes), Manicure (20 minutes), Nail tip application (20 minutes), Nail wrap (20 minutes), Sculptured nail procedure (20 minutes), and Nail polishing (10 minutes). Both exams require a minimum passing score of 75 to receive your license.

For the written exam, take numerous practice quizzes to become familiar with the multiple-choice format. Utah State Board exams are currently administered by an authorized testing partner, such as Prov or PSI. Written exams are offered at multiple computer-based testing centers across the state, with convenient locations often found in cities like North Salt Lake, Sunset (Ogden area), North Orem (Provo area), and Hurricane (St. George area). Practical exams are scheduled at specific times in fewer select locations, so registering early is crucial once you have completed your hours.
