While your RTO will give you precise passing scores for their theory preparation material, the mandated WorkSafe assessment requires a very high level of understanding. You will have a time limit, typically around one hour, to complete this section.

2. Calculations Assessment: This is a separate, critical knowledge section that evaluates your ability to make mathematical calculations crucial for safe operation. This includes calculating load capacities based on weight, load center, and the lifting capabilities specified on the forklift’s load chart. Accuracy is non-negotiable in this section.

3. Performance Assessment (Practical): This is the hands-on demonstration of your ability to operate the forklift. Under the direct supervision of an assessor, you will be required to perform a standard operating course. This will involve completing pre-start checks, safely navigating a specified path, lifting and lowering a variety of loads to and from different shelving levels, and executing a safe shut-down procedure. Every step will be checked for strict adherence to safety protocols.

To be deemed competent, you must successfully pass all three components. If you are not yet competent in one area, you can typically re-sit that specific component within a predetermined time frame, which is usually within 60 days of the first assessment.

How to Study and Exam Centers

• Study the Learner Guide: Your RTO will provide a comprehensive learner guide and activity book. Read these cover-to-cover and complete all exercises. They contain the exact content the knowledge assessment covers.

• Take Practice Quizzes: Use any practice questions or online mock exams provided by your RTO. The format will be very similar to the real theory assessment.

• Master Load Calculations: Pay special attention to the formulas for calculating load capacities and center of gravity. Practice these calculations until they are second nature. This is often where students struggle most.

• Practice Driving: The key is maximizing your hands-on time. Take every opportunity during the practical training to rehearse the pre-start checks, driving the course, and managing different loads. Ask for feedback from your instructor constantly.

• Learn to identify hazards: Rehearse mentally and during training identifying hazards above you, at eye level, and below you.

Where to Take the Assessment: You cannot take this exam at a public testing center like Pearson VUE. The full training and final mandated assessment are only offered by WorkSafe Victoria-authorized Registered Training Organisations (RTOs). Assessments typically occur at the RTO's specific physical training facilities at the conclusion of the course. In some cases, RTOs can provide authorized on-site training and assessment directly at a workplace, provided the site meets safety and operational resource requirements. Once you are successfully deemed competent by your RTO, you will be issued a Notice of Assessment (NOA), which you must then lodge at an Australia Post branch to apply for your official High Risk Work license from WorkSafe.
