What the Course Entails and Exam Details

To succeed in the CHPNA exam, you must have a comprehensive understanding of the core concepts that define expert hospice and palliative care. The exam content blueprint, which you should study diligently, is organized into several key areas with specific weightings.

  • Patient Care: Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) (approx. 32-33%): This is the largest section, focusing on hands-on care. It covers assisting with hygiene, grooming, ambulation, mobility, toileting, as well as managing nutrition and hydration.
  • Patient Status and Environment (approx. 28-30%): This area evaluates your ability to identify changes in condition. It includes monitoring functional and respiratory status, observing patient safety, and managing the care environment.
  • Psychosocial and Spiritual Care (approx. 20-24%): This section tests your holistic approach. It covers providing spiritual support, maintaining neutrality, supporting patients through body image and mental status changes, addressing bereavement and grief, and facilitating communication between all parties.
  • Professional Skills (approx. 13-20%): The final section covers the essential non-clinical aspects of your role. It includes understanding interdisciplinary collaboration, ethics, roles, and professional responsibilities within a care team.

What to Expect in the Final Exam

The CHPNA final exam is a computer-based assessment, designed to test your application of knowledge rather than just rote memorization. Knowing what to expect on test day can significantly reduce anxiety and improve performance.

  • Format: The exam consists exclusively of 110 multiple-choice questions. Out of these, 100 are scored, and 10 are unscored pretest questions used for future exam development. Each question provides four possible answers, with only one correct response.
  • Time Limit: You will be given a total of 2.5 hours to complete the entire examination. This requires good time management, allowing a little over a minute per question.
  • Passing Score Requirement: The exam uses scaled scoring. To pass and earn your CHPNA credential, you must achieve a minimum scaled score of 500.
  • Results: If you take the exam in person at a test center, you will receive your score report before you leave. If you choose the Live Remote Proctoring option, you will receive an immediate pass/fail notice on-screen, followed by a detailed score report via email within 24 hours.

How to Study and Exam Centers

Your journey to becoming a CHPNA requires a strategic approach to study and an understanding of the test logistics.

Actionable Study Strategies:

  • Master the Handbook: Your first and most critical resource is the official CHPNA Candidate Handbook and Content Outline, available on the HPCC website. Treat this as your ultimate study guide.
  • Use Practice Questions: A core part of your preparation should be a high-quality CHPNA practice exam and question bank. Consistently answering practice questions helps you become familiar with the exam's language, format, and the level of difficulty.
  • Analyze Rationales: When reviewing practice answers, do not just check if you are right. Read the detailed rationales for both correct and incorrect answers. This deepens your understanding and helps you avoid similar mistakes.
  • Target Your Weaknesses: Use practice test results to identify your weakest areas among the core content categories and allocate more study time to them.

Exam Delivery and Centers:

The CHPNA exam is administered by PSI, a professional testing company. You have two main options for where to take your test:

  • Designated PSI Test Centers: PSI operates a vast network of secure, physical testing centers across the United States. You can search for the one closest to you during the application process.
  • Live Remote Proctoring (LRP): For maximum convenience, you can opt to take the exam from your own home or another suitable location. A live proctor will monitor you through your webcam to ensure a secure exam environment.
